You know something? It’s draft week!
Doesn’t really feel like it, does it? Seems like things are a little more subdued this year, huh? For some reason, it feels like I have not seen or heard as much from Mel Kiper (insert obligatory hair joke here), Todd McShay, et all this year. From what I can recall, I seem to remember hearing a lot more analysis on the TV or radio over the last couple of years.
Why is that, do you think?
I think the clear answer is the lockout. Feeling apathetic is easy, and certainly understandable. Millionaires vs. billionaires is difficult for those of us working 9-5 jobs to identify with, much less understand. Both sides are ruining our offseason, which for the past decade-plus, we have been told emphatically is key to winning in the regular season (he says without a tinge of irony being a Redskins fan). I completely understand the apathy and even the anger felt by many fans.
But don’t let them ruin your draft week! This is historically (for the last 20 years anyway) the best time to be a Redskins fan. Enjoy the promised of a rebirth the draft provides, embrace the unbridled optimism derived from the thought that this draft will be the difference maker. Forest Gump could easily have said that life is like the NFL draft, you never know what you’re gonna get. Mike Shanahan got Jake Plummer to be a respectable QB! Look at his track record at running back and along the O-line!
Sure, we don’t know what we are going to get, but isn’t that part of the fun? Once the picks are made, we will spend hours pouring over YouTube videos of the players, analyzing each pick and how they fit into our system. So get excited, ignore the lockout for this week. Click on those mock-draft websites, see what you like and what you hate, but get excited either way.
