George Atallah, head of the NFLPA, speaks about lockout

George Atallah, NFLPA Assistant Executive Director of External Affairs, appeared live this morning on the Sports Junkies on 106.7 the Fan DC this morning to field questions from the hosts as well as fans.  Here are a few highlights.

When asked about the possible “mis-information” by the media on the NFLPA’s part, Atallah said:

“We don’t overreact to those things. We received the lock-out letter at 12:01am.  We want to stick to the facts and do not feel making all that noise is not necessary”

When asked about “What Jeff Pash lied about”, Atallah said:

“He made it sound like he invented the salary cap.  He looked convincing. But we will try to make as much sense as possible.”

When asked about the numbers they(owners) showed:

It wasn’t enough therefore why even look.  So they NFLPA turned down the offer made because this would not get them anywhere.

Why should the players have the ability to look at the books:

They asked for muti-billion pay cuts.  The players looked at the salary cap numbers and they felt this would cost guys in the locker room jobs.

Now that you are de-certified what is the role of the NFLPA:

The PA is now the head of the player’s trade association.

Caller Ed, why do the owners have to show the books when my company would not show me the books:

When you take a pay-cut at your job and take a pay cut, you are now free to work at will anywhere else in the country.  Players could not because they were unionized.

Caller Rick asked, why did they file a suit in Minnesota and not in DC:

The easy answer is for 18-20 years the league and players had their jurisdiction there and that is where they had to file.
