Redskins make history, but here’s the kicker

The Redskins’ season has finally come to an end.  For many, this is a blessing as it brings a close to another disappointing year that started out with a lot of hope.  They always do.  I should clarify, as the title to this article is a bit of misnomer.  First off, the Redskins did not make history.  They were a part of history, and I’ll get to that in a moment.  Secondly, the kicker part of the title is a lead-in to another topic that I’m going to touch on.  So let’s get started with how the Skins helped Brett Favre.

The Redskins hold the dubious honor of being beaten by Brett Favre for his last win in professional football.  He’s already come out and said he will not be back next year and I give greater odds of the Mayan calendar prophecies being true than Favre making one last return.  He didn’t go out the way he would have liked, though I imagine this is what Jenn Sterger would have wanted; an ungraceful finish to an unflattering year.  Favre should have retired last year, but no sense beating a dead Favre into the turf.  His career is over, he beat the Redskins in his last win, and an era has ended.  One of the great quarterbacks of all time has left the stadium.  I, as many, will miss him.

Now here is the kicker, or should I say who should no longer be the kicker.  The Redskins lost to the New York Giants by three points.  The regulation would have ended as a tie if it were not for a missed chip-shot by Graham Gano.  I know I’m throwing apples into an orange cart and the game really meant nothing for either team in the end.  Still though, a win against a division rival would have been nice, and once again Graham Gano, in my opinion, cost us the game.  This is not the first instance, leading all the way back to the Houston Texans loss early in the season.  Gano has missed a multitude of kicks, a lot of which were gimmies.  Again my chorus sings Gano has got to go.  So I now wonder if the Skins will still stand by Gano.  Maybe Kyle Shanahan and Gano are buddy-buddy like he and Grossman are.  But I digress.  A kicker is the least of the Skins’ worries right now.  It’s time to start the rebuilding process and focus on finding a quarterback.  Gano is just an easy target to kick (no pun intended) right now.
