This off-season is looming and it is beginning to start thinking of things like which players will be let go or not retained.
Clinton Portis and Santana Moss are two players who have been a part of this team’s only successful years in the last ten, and also represent an era of which the Redskins may have to move on from.
Clinton Portis had his second straight year end early due to his placement on IR. Despite his shortened seasons, he has been able to produce. His main problem is staying healthy and on the field. When Portis came to Washington, many did not believe he would finish his eight year deal and now he is at the crossroads.
When Portis met with the media today he said (via John Keim, The Examiner):
“I did everything I was asked,” Portis said. “I showed I could continue to play. I showed I was dedicated to this program and turning this team around. I flew under the radar and moved from the forefront and let everyone else do their thing and I did my work quiet. It was tough early on not getting the ball and being healthy and then once we established the running game I was done.
“It’s out of my control. If they want to keep me they have the first option. If they want to let me go then I’m OK, understanding the business side of this. It will be a bittersweet moment, but life has to go on.”
I can see both scenarios in which Portis remains with this team in some capacity and also is jettisoned in favor of younger backs.
As for Santana Moss, he is quietly having one of his best years as a Redskin. Eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for the fourth time since he has been a Redskin, he joins the ranks of Art Monk and Gary Clark as one of the top receivers in Redskin’s history. I believe he can still fit in here, granted the right talent is put around him. He is still double covered and if the Redskins can add a true deep or physical threat, his skill set will be a tremendous asset.
When asked about his thoughts on returning, Moss said:
“I don’t feel like leaving is going to help me win games somewhere else,” Moss said, frankly. “I feel that, you know, somewhere that you are comfortable with, that you feel like you can play, and your family can live and, you know, you can raise your family and live comfortably, and play a great game, and play at a high level. You know, why leave? So that’s why I feel the way I feel.”
The Redskins will once again be going through change this off season. The question for these two players from “the U” now is: will they be a part of it?
