The Redskins can learn from the NFC South

Drew Brees and the NFC South should enjoy success for years to come.

Tonight as the Atlanta Falcons host the New Orleans Saints to decide who could be the NFC South Champ, they represent two franchises that have undergone turmoil only to find success.

When you look at the Saints and the Falcons, the first thing that you see is a solid quarterback.  However, as great as Drew Brees and Matt Ryan have been, notoriety and elite status have not been linked to them for the duration of their careers.

Clearly, Ryan was a rookie when he came on the scene in 2008 and opened eyes.  The Falcons were taking a gamble on who was thrusted into a starting role from the get-go.  Since then, he has produced three straight seasons of quality football.

Drew Brees was a good quarterback from San Diego.  Not known to be elite, he came to New Orleans after the Chargers felt they were ready to go with the younger Philip Rivers.  Since then, Brees has found his name said in the same sentence as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

This year, the Redskins have seen ups and a good amount of downs.  However, as bad as the Redskins have been they Falcons and Saints have had it as bad or even worse. The 15-20 year slump that the Redskins are going through is rough nonetheless.  The two playoff wins in only three appearances are not enough to appease the fans that remember three Super Bowl wins in four tries.

As bad as this season has gone, other have been through worse.  I believe that this team was required to take it on the chin.  If there is some order to the balance of football, the Redskins needed to suck.  Plain and simple.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did it last year, and this year they are much improved and in the NFC Wildcard hunt. However, the Bucs did it the conventional way and built upwards with youth.

So in the off-season the Redskins will have to work on what has made the NFC South relevant again.

They must have a solid quarterback who can run the offense.  They do not need a stud.  They do not need a freak of nature running the show.  But if they have a guy who can make things go, they can be in business.

The Redskins need to fit the Mike Shanahan offense and 3-4 defense with players who can play it.  Believe it or not but this squad is really just remnants of what Joe Gibbs built. Jim Zorn and Vinny Cerato did no building when they were here, so if this is the reboot year next year is the construction year.

Finally, the everyone just needs to be patient and hope this all happens under Shanahan and Jim Hasslett.  I say hope because as fans, thats all they can do.  If it works, that’s great for all of us but there is nothing we can do.  All we can do is what Shanahan tells us time and time again “let’s wait and see”.  But it can be done as long as the guy in charge has enough patience to see this out.
