Could the Redskins be worse off than last year?

Remember last year?  Remember 4-12?  Remember Jim Zorn, head coach of the Washington Redskins?  I thought that would be the low point; there was no way things could have gotten worse than what went down last year.

That is, until this year happened.

What did we do this offseason to respond to 4-12?

It was business as usual, bring in the big name Coach, bring in the big name GM, bring in the big name player on their last legs, and get rid of draft picks.  Like we always do, we praised a lot of the moves at the beginning of the season, but how do they make us feel now (sick, disturbed, saddened,  discouraged, take your pick)?

What happens if we finish 5-11?  What if Mike Shanahan actually only gets 1 more win than Jim Zorn?  That is nothing to be excited about, at all, and it seems to me like things are just going downhill from there.  This season has been nothing but the same old story, with even more drama and garbage surrounding this organization than there ever has been.  Our two highest paid players are going to get fired (one is currently riding the bench while the other one is probably throwing millions away on depreciable assets like all the stupid players do) and some of the fans are actually excited about Rex “I’m going deep” Grossman (please stop).

We’ve worn out the Haynesworth topic, he is a joke and a bum, and I don’t want to seethe about how much I/we hate him anymore.  But seriously, how much does it sting that we brought in Donovan McNabb for a second and fourth rounder and paid him something like 15 million for a one year rental?  Only the Redskins could pull off such a huge miscalculation.  With the benching, the Shanahan’s are just dumping salt into this seasons emotional wounds.  Rex Grossman is not the future of this team.  No matter how well sexy Rexy knows the offense he will never have the skills to lead the Redskins back to the Superbowl, let alone a winning season.  If he is really our starter going into next season with John Beck as our backup, how big of a step back is this franchising taking?  Not only are we not going to win in the near future, but we wouldn’t even be developing a quarterback for the future.  The dynamic duo of 30+ year olds may cause some fans, including possibly myself to be sick.

Please don’t tell me that less than a half of good football against a pass defense that might somehow be worse than ours is really exciting to you.  Did you forget about the first half?  Did you forget about the lob pass to Gerald Sensabaugh that should have been a pick six?  What about that pass to a wide open Santana Moss in the end zone that sailed 10 feet over his head?  What about the fact that we still lost?  He played less than a good half of football, and that’s it.  If he goes out against Jacksonville and the Giants and pulls out wins with good performances maybe I’ll give him some credit, but I still won’t be excited about Rex Grossman, ever.

The Redskins haven’t been a legitimate Super Bowl contender since they won in 1991, when I was two years old.  How much longer will we have to wait for something good to materialize in DC?

its called building steps have they jumped forward? no but I think there has been some things from this season that will help them get there

On offense we have Trent Williams on the o-line now, we have discovered Anthony Armstrong belongs in the NFL, we found out if they can keep Torain healthy the running game might be alright, and the tight end position is three deep as far as guys that I think could make big contributions if they are targeted in the passing game.

Is Grossman a long term answer? No but lets be real neither was was McNabb. Personally I hope they can trade McNabb to maybe Minnesota or Arizona and get a 3rd or 4th round pick then it would really just have cost a 2nd round for a year of McNabb. Let Grossman start sign a qb in the 1st or 2nd round if they feel a good one is available when they draft and then let him sit a year or two while you work on the offensive line.

I dont think long term they are worse off than they were last year

ownerships the problem. a good idea for any future signings might be an iq test.shanahan is a proven winner give him a chance to make all the changes he cant build a winner overnight.please dont sign randy moss.

    • Scott Stewart

I agree I really hope they dont sign Randy Moss either…

Normally I don’t like when the Skins make big name pickups but there are some receivers I think they should look at getting one of and that is Larry Fitzgerald or Vincent Jackson. I think both are free agents going in to next season I would take Fitzgerald first if not him then Jackson

  • Steve-O

I would say the skins had a good super bowl contender in 1999 too, brad johnson and that o-line were nasty!

  • alocowboy

You’re nuts. Rex played far better than McNabb has all season. Nobody is saying Rex is the future, but he has already led a team the Super Bowl. Besides McNabb’s last game, what game was he better than sexy?

The defense is the 800lb turd in the living room that needs fixing fast. THe offense will be fine now that we have at least one qb who knows how to run it well enough to score 30 points against anybody. Might I remind you, it was this same terrible Cowboy’s defense that stopped the skins from getting into the end zone for 16 quarters before sexy lit them up.

I like McNabb. Wish he would’ve worked out. But he didn’t. Facts don’t lie.

    • Miles Aghajanian

Saying Rex Grossman “led” the bear to a Superbowl is a little silly, more like Devin Hester + Bears defense, he was pretty insignificant in terms of a positive impact.

I think Grossman played better than McNabb in the second half for sure (first half was iffy you have to admit), there is no way to argue against that. I just know that he isn’t good enough to be the future QB of this franchise and it stings that the person who we thought would be obviously isn’t either. I’m in wait and see mode, if he puts up 30 against the Jags and Giants my mind might change a little but until then I am not going to be behind this silly Rex Grossman movement.

      Thanks for reading alo.

  • ‘Skins Nerd

Ditto “alocowboy”. Hey Mr. Aghajani, its easy to hate Grossman and see the sky falling down.

But the fact is in 13 games, McNabb never scored 30 points — never led long, sustained, consecutive TD drives — much less three. If Moss didn’t drop the late pass, we’d most likely be looking at a W. I think most of us underestimated the dismal state of this franchise, and how long it would take to repair it. Yes, mistakes have been made, but at least the coach has the stones to admit it, cut the losses, and move forward. At least for now, it looks like grown-ups are running the show — and that’s a huge step forward.

    • Miles Aghajanian

The an on the end of the name is the most important part!

I definitely agree that we all had no idea how bad things were and I know McNabb didn’t do anything all year. I just hope that in addition to the mistakes slowly going away, the Shanahan’s could just do a little bit better of a job to keep the drama level surrounding the skins a little lower going forward.

Thanks for reading and chiming in

      I hope
