Skins lose but Grossman is not to blame

Look I know there are a lot of McNabb fans out there who will say well look we still lost which is true but would they have won with McNabb? Would the Redskins have even been in the game that late in to it? I don’t think so

Don’t get me wrong it was far from a perfect showing by Grossman and the Skins offense but the offense did manage to put up 30 points. When was the last time the offense put up 30 points with McNabb? Never……..

Grossman started rough but to be fair he had not started a game since 2008 and as for actual game time experience going in to today he had only 7 pass attempts this season. So he has not had the same length of time to build chemistry with the players around him that McNabb had and it showed early on. He came out and struggled early having a hard time finding his rhythm but as the game progressed he started to look more comfortable than McNabb has for most of this season.

He completed passes to 6 different players

Armstrong- 5 catches, 100 yards
Moss- 8 catches, 72 yards and 2 touchdowns
Cooley- 5 catches, 62 yards and 1 touchdown
Torain- 5 catches,  48 yards and 1 touchdown
Sellers- 1 catch, 27 yards
Williams- 1 catch, 13 yards

I wont put all the blame on McNabb for the Redskins inefficiency but he has overthrown and thrown behind players a whole lot this season not to mention all of his one hoppers. Grossman did not throw nearly as many bad passes as McNabb has done recently and most importantly he threw for 4 touchdowns.

He did throw two interceptions but one was on their second drive of the game and the other came while trying to force the ball up the field from their own 20 with no timeouts and just 50 seconds on the clock. He did settle down after his first interception and his second came in a hard situation they were on their own 47 with just 13 seconds left and needed to try and force something. Plus lets be honest McNabb has thrown for more interceptions than touchdowns this year and has struggled to get points on the board lately. I honestly think with McNabb in it would have been a blowout today in favor of Dallas.

Grossman is not a long term starter but he will come cheaper than McNabb next year and the Redskins are not happy with McNabb. Washington will not be in the playoffs next year even if they keep McNabb so in a way it makes sense to test out Grossman and see how he can do in the Skins offense. Look for the Redskins to trade McNabb in the off season to a team like Minnesota or Arizona hopefully picking up a 3rd round pick in the process. They need to draft a qb in the 2011 draft and let him sit a year behind Grossman and use some of the other 2011 draft picks on offensive lineman and maybe even some 2012 draft picks as well.

The reason the offense seemed more productive with Grossman is because he can throw passes with more touch than McNabb, making them easier to catch. Note how much more production we got from screen passes.

Grossman throws the screen with an arc, instead of a rope like McNabb. The arc gets the ball over the linemen, and enables the receiver to catch the ball in stride. Grossman certainly does not have the arm that McNabb has, and this probably makes him less effective with some throws, but I bet the receivers like catching the Grossman “arc” more than the McNabb rope.

Grossman played well. I think his play will give the whole franchise a lift. I wrote about it on my blog.

Grossman got his yards and touchdowns in “garbage time” when the cowboys were rushing 3 down linemen and playing a 3 deep zone. As soon as the cowboys blitzed him he got sacked twice in a row and the skins ended up punting allowing the cowboys on their game winning drive and the next series he threw an interception ending the game. But it’s not the quarterback’s fault the who problem this season has been the play calling and the game planning. It is clear to me that the Redskins have a coaching problem.
