Cooley is too good to just be a blocker

How many people watched Sunday’s game and wondered where is Chris Cooley? or how about why are they not throwing to him? I know that I was and so were the people watching the game with me…..

Cooley is a play maker in the receiving game and is probably the most consistent one the Redskins have. Linebackers struggle to cover him and defensive backs have a hard time bringing him down. For those reasons alone he needs to be out there running routes not sitting back trying to block which is what he did for most of the game on Sunday.

If there is one thing I’ve learned since Cooley came in to the league its that good things happen when you get him involved in the receiving game. Take for example the last drive of the game on Sunday he caught 2 passes for a total of 22 yards and both catches were big ones. The first catch came on a 2 and 10 and went for 7 yards giving the Skins a manageable third and short which they were able to convert and the second was on 1st and 10 and went for 15 yards resulting in a first down. Yet he was only targeted 4 times all game long and was used primarily as a blocker up until that drive why?

It appears that I might not be the only one frustrated with how Cooley was used Sunday because here is what Cooley himself had to say Monday on his weekly 1 hour appearance with Chad Dukes and Lavar Arrington on the radio station known as 106.7 The Fan

“If you like me, go to the game and cheer for me. I mean, watch me block. Who knows?”

“I hate coming out of a game with two catches, I hate not touching the ball until the fourth quarter,”

“I mean, I’m not the kind of guy that will throw a tantrum on the sideline, but I’d like to be able to make more plays for this team, especially when we’re not scoring points.”

“What I would like is I want third-down catches, and I want catches in the red zone.”

Like I said it was an hour long but the basic gist of it is Cooley seems to not be too happy with the way he is being used in the offense and that makes two of us….
