I’m gonna have to type with both hands for this post. Brian Orakpo, one of my favorite nouveau Redskins, apparently hasn’t seen some of the same games I have. Here’s a quote attributed to him in The Washington Post:
“It’s just mental things. We’re missing tackles, guys are out of their gaps, trying to make big plays. and that’s why we get drugged like that. So it’s just more of a consistent thing than just flat-out getting our butts whipped….For some reason we’re losing to teams that, on paper, we’re supposed to beat. But that’s how the NFL works.”
I’ll certainly buy the fact the Redskins’ defenders make mental mistakes – loads of them. But the blow-outs at the hands of the Beagles and the G-men weren’t due to just mental mistakes. The ‘Skins’ defense didn’t man-up. It got out-toughed, to coin a new phrase.
Brian Orakpo knows all about physical play. He’s a tough guy who gets held by the opposing teams’ tackles so often they’re still holding him when he’s on the sidelines. He fights through the holds, of course. So, why oh why would he deny that the ‘Skins have gotten their heads (and other body parts) handed to them lately? My guess is that he’s a proud man who gives his all on the field, and that he just doesn’t want to think about others not doing the same.
