Youth movement is the way to go for the Redskins offense

McNabb protected by a make shift line.

The Redskins have seen their ups and downs this season and bright spots have been few. However, one bright spot that cannot be denied is the progression being shown by the younger members of the Redskins team.

In the offseason older veterans were brought to help smooth out the transitions being installed on offense.  Veterans like Joey Galloway at wide receiver, Artis Hicks at right guard, and running backs Larry Johnson and Willie Paker were brought into the fold be an extension of the coaching staff on the field and speed up the learning process for the team.  With three full months of football in the books, we now know that was not the case.

Two weeks ago in Tennessee, we saw inevitable doom when Artis Hicks did not suit up to play and Casey Rabach went down due to injury midway through the second quarter. The situation became more grim when back-up Derrick Dockery too when down to injury.  There were no more backups and reserve linemen were expected to play out of position.

The result: a bigger more aggressive offense line capable of protecting McNabb.  Will Montgomery at center and Stephan Heyer playing right guard for the first time in his career looked to be an improvement.

Most fans hoped that this line would start coming into the game with the Vikings.  Their cries were left unanswered as the incumbents resumed their roles, and McNabb was once again tossed around like a rag doll and running lanes were few or non-existant.

At receiver, most fans thought that Joey Galloway was no longer capable of producing or being a threat at that position.  Ironically one game after his most productive game of the season, he was let go in favor of rookie Terrence Austin.  Though he had no catches versus Minnesota, it is clear that his role will expand as has his fellow rookie teammate Brandon Banks.

Versus the Giants I hope to see the offensive line that finished the game versus Tennessee.  Not only are they a step towards the future, they give the Redskins a better chance to win now.  I hope Terrence Austin gets more looks on offense.  He led the team in catches in the preseason and has a good chance of being a decent alternative at receiver.  The bottom line is for future to look bright, then the future must be now.
