Redskins Go for the Knockout

  • Andre Johnson, WR Houston Texans
  • Stephen Jackson, HB St. Louis Rams
  • Michael Vick, QB Philadelphia Eagles
  • LeSean McCoy, HB Philadelphia Eagles
  • Clay Matthews, LB Green Bay Packers
  • Jermichael Finley, TE Green Bay Packers
  • Donald Lee, WR Green Bay Packers
  • Joseph Addai, HB Indianapolis Colts
  • Vince Young, QB Tennessee Titans
  • Adrian Peterson, HB Minnesota Vikings

At first glance this may appear to be a list of the NFL’s most promising talent or even a preliminary roster of stars to appear in the 2011 Pro Bowl. The list above is actually an active account of all the “major” players the Redskins have sent to the locker room for a quarter, a game and even an entire season. The Redskins have had inconsistencies all year long on both sides of the football but the one thing they have done is hit and hit hard. I don’t want you to confuse “hitting” with “tackling” because we all know Washington has trouble wrapping up. When the Redskins do get that contact, man does it pay off. Some of these injuries have contributed directly to victories for Washington.

Michael Vick was crushed at the one yard line of Washington (later called back by penalty); that lead to Kolb coming in and as we’ve witnessed, an entirely different Eagles attack. Next, the Redskins take out several Packers at home including their beast at tight end Jermichael Finley and the NFL’s current sack leader Clay Matthews. The lack of pressure from Green Bay and the depletion of their receiving corps gives McNabb enough time to throw and the defense an even playing field. Finally, Vince Young hits Nate Washington over the middle for a key third down conversion but on the play he injures a flexor tendon in his throwing hand. Not only is Young out for the rest of the game, he’s placed on injured reserve just days after the game.

Watching Lorenzo Alexander, London Fletcher, Brian Orakpo and Laron Landry layout people all year has been a privilege. With the current seasons playoff hopes in doubt we can at least be assured there will be some big hits on Sunday and maybe even a game changing injury in favor of the Redskins.

So who are the Redskins next potential victims?

This week they travel to East Rutherford, NJ to take on the New York Giants. The Giants offensive line isn’t the greatest and they are significantly weaker at receiver as of now. The Redskins could have some success with pressuring him and causing turnovers. There is also the Brandon Jacobs factor to consider. After a rough outing for Ahmad Bradshaw against Philadelphia, Brandon Jacobs started against the Jags last Sunday and had a little success. Hopefully Bradshaw can regain his status as the starter or the Redskins can force him to play. He’s a liability anytime the ball is in his hands.

After New York there are games against Tampa Bay, Dallas, Jacksonville and the Giants again. The Redskins have a lot of ground to make up but if there is any team that can do it, it’s them. The drive for 5 begins has officially begun.

DISCLAIMER: I do not wish injury on any player in the National Football League (because Tony Romo is already hurt) nor do I endorse or support any extracurricular physical activity after the whistle is blown (e.g. Finnegan v. Johnson). This is simply an account of players the Redskins have sidelined over the course of the 2010-2011 NFL season.
