The Washington Redskins: 59 minute team in a 60 minute game

The Washington Redskins have shown that they are nothing more than a mediocre team this season.  Flashes of brilliance are negated by stupid mistakes and poor execution.  Just look at the Minnesota Vikings game for evidence:

1.  Anthony Armstrong burns the Vikings secondary down the left side of the field for a huge completion.  On the next play, he is hit in the chest with the ball and drops it.

2.  Chris Cooley makes a spectacular grab on a third down to continue a drive.  During the next series, he is hit in the chest with the ball and drops it.

3.  Santana Moss does a great job getting open and catching balls for first downs throughout the game.  Deep in Redskins territory at a critical point in the game, he is hit in the chest with the ball and not only drops it, but flips it into the air for an easy interception.

4.  Perry Riley negates two excellent returns (one for a touchdown) by Brandon Banks from unnecessary blocks that football players are taught not to make in the high school.

5.  Toby Gerhart is getting the ball with five minutes left on the clock and the lead.  There are no tricks.  Simply tackle him.

6.  Brett Favre is 41 years old.  How does a defense allow him to run up the middle for a first down to end the game?  Even the commentator on TV called what the play was going to be.

The top tier teams in the NFL not only make spectacular plays, but continue to execute at a high level consistently.  The Redskins have shown that they have the talent and are capable of being a great team, but can’t keep it together when it counts.  A 59 minute team in a 60 minute game will not succeed in this league.

I am in no way saying that the Redskins have doomed themselves for the rest of the season, but they must be able to figure out how to capitalize on great plays and hang on to the momentum of a game.  The NFC East is still very much up for grabs, and this last stretch of the season is where the true identity of a team shows up.  An elite team will put this game and the mistakes behind them, and move forward with some confident, hard hitting football.  Hopefully the Redskins can do that.
