Terrence Austin was drafted by the Redskins in the seventh round of this year’s NFL Draft. He was brought on to be a speedy receiver and likely serve as an option at kick and punt returner. It did not turn out that way as he was cut at the end of training camp and brought back a practice squad player. Now its looks as if his chance has come as he has made the trip to Tennessee with the team as it looks to face the Titans.
Terrence Austin was the team’s leading receiver in the offseason and was a surprise, to many, to find out he did not make the 53-man roster. Part of the reason for this was undrafted free agent Brandon Banks emerged as an absolute threat in special teams, wowing many with his spectacular punt return for a touchdown in the first game of the preseason.
In a veteran laden roster which has not shown much production outside of Santana Moss, the wide receiving corps desperately needs a spark. Joey Galloway was brought in to be a model of excellence in terms of running routes and play the position right. As it turns out, he has greatly underachieved since he has been here.
Queue Terrence Austin.
I had a chance to speak to him in a phone interview in March and I saw a kid excited and ready for a chance. That burning desire to just have an opportunity to play was something I knew would give him a fighting chance to play for this team. That chance has come and I hope to see him do big things.
As the Redskins head to Tennessee, it is expected that the Redskins will only carry five wide receivers — confirmed and tweeted by Chris Russell. What does that mean who will be out? Will the Redskins carry only two running backs? I hope not. Will Derrick Dockery be deactivated once again? I also hope not, Artis Hicks is unlikely to play therefore Will Montgomery may get some playing time, leaving no back-ups. My guess is one of the current wide receivers will be given a seat for Sunday’s contest. It is between Joey Galloway and Roydell Williams. I would have assumed that Galloway would be cut, but Shanahan’s ambiguity with the media was in play and he would not have tipped his hand.
Galloway’s lone highlight
I expect that it will be Galloway on the bench, and perhaps let go this week. This is a good move all around, despite Austin’s numbers come Monday morning. He was a great possession receiver in the preseason and is what the team desperately needs now. Will it pay off, we will have to wait and see.
