The Redskins can win their clash with the Titans

Another Sunday has arrived and with it another weekend of wondering what new controversy rears its ugly head as the Redskins play a very beatable Titans squad.  To hope that Sunday plays out without a hitch might be as unlikely as Peter Angelos giving up control of the Orioles. But then again, stranger things have happened in a region fraught with monumental letdowns when it comes to its’ sports teams.

The matchup has some very interesting side-stories which include Albert Haynesworth’s return to Tennessee; a game in which Randy Moss must dominate or hang up his towel and an ailing Vince Young trying to prove that his return to grace is just as relevant as Michael Vick’s.  The Titans are coming off of a two game losing streak and are hungry.  Still very much in the playoff hunt (who isn’t this year); they are looking to make a statement of their own.

The Redskins can win this game, but they have to do something it doesn’t look like they have done all year.  They have to play with heart.  They have to play with determination and the realization that their playoff hopes, though diminishing, are very much alive as well.  The Skins have a remaining schedule in which they could conceivably win out.  The toughest of these games will be against the Giants, but as Dallas proved, even Giants fall. It all starts with the Titans though, and coming off of last week’s razzie, it would be best if the Skins played like it was the season opener.   They have the talent, this much I am certain of.  Donovan McNabb is still a great quarterback with some very potent targets in Chris Cooley and Santana Moss.  Clinton Portis may be good to go for game time and when he wants, can still pound the football.  The Redskins have had sparks of genius all year long; they have just had trouble igniting the fire.  Now is the time to burn the forest down.

This might sound surprising, but the key to winning the game against the Titans will not be stopping Chris Johnson; it will be not neglecting Randy Moss.  Moss is the X factor in the game.  He is an unknown variable that the Redskins can not ignore in their defensive strategy.  The moment they do, a quick 88 yard bomb will set the tone for the rest of the game.  The Titans will look to exploit the Redskins passing defense.  Chris Johnson can be stopped, and he has been stopped this year.  The dual threat is that the Titans have the best running back in the game right now and one of the greatest receivers of all time.

The first offensive drive for the Titans will determine the rest of the game for the Redskins.  Look for a pumped up defense and hope that the Skins can force a quick three-and-out.  The Redskins do best when the defense starts with a bang.  All controversies aside, McNabb can lead the offense to victory.  The game can, and must, be won.  It will all come down to whether the Redskins show up to play some football, or stand on the sidelines wallowing in the defeats of games passed.
