Looking Back: Did the Redskins miss the boat with Randy Moss?

Should the Skins have gotten Moss?

Did the Redskins miss the boat with Randy Moss?

By: Miles Aghajanian

When Randy Moss was cut by the Vikings, I’m sure a lot of Redskins fans including myself held their breath, knowing that if he made it to us on the Waiver wire we would certainly pick this future hall of famer up right?  Well a few days later it just so happens that the only team to claim him was the Tennessee Titans, a (5-3) team a full 8 spots further down the waiver wire than us (23 to 15).  So the question arises why did the Redskins decide to pass on Randy Moss?  And was it the right move?

Let’s look at it from both angles….

Why we made the right move passing on Moss?  Well Randy is obviously a big headache, with an apparent love affair for his former team, coach, and quarterback.  New England is obviously the team that Randy Moss wants to be on (despite some contrary comments earlier in the season).  So maybe it was the right move because we would just be getting a sad version of what #84 used to be.  He can also be a huge headache.  You don’t just throw a third round pick away like the Vikings did unless this guy was such a huge nuisance to your team that you just couldn’t take him anymore.  Washington already has a lot of headaches in the locker-room going into the bye week and maybe we have all we can handle with Haynesworth’s summer saga and recent Rex Grossman sighting.  All and all it was the right move, we have enough drama here, lets rest up during the bye week and see what we can do with a healthy/rested McNabb, Portis, ATV (All Torain Vehicle), and O-Line.

Now…what were we thinking passing on this guy!  I mean seriously no one could keep a straight face trying to say Joey Galloway and Roydell Williams are playing worthy of roster spots on this team, and that Randy Moss wouldn’t immediately put more credibility in this offense.   The O-line is struggling but it’s no secret that McNabb LOVES to throw the deep ball.  While seeing Anthony Armstrong pulling in some of those deep balls and his overall development is great, imagine what Randy Moss could open up for the rest of the receiving crew.

Mike Shanahan has talked all offseason and year about winning right now.  We have been rumored to be involved with big name receiver Vincent Jackson, and were willing to give up picks.  If we were willing to give up picks for Vincent Jackson, who mind you is a bit of a troublemaker and head case himself, why would we not place a waiver claim on the big time play maker this offense is missing in Randy Moss, especially with this win now mentality.  We could have gotten him for nothing, except some cash, but that hasn’t stopped the skins before, and he would have been gone after the year if he was a pain.  Why would we not at least do a little experiment, it seems like the positives of this move far outweigh the negatives.

Time to weigh in, what are your thoughts?  Would you rather have the #84 Redskins jersey being worn by Randy Moss or Joey Galloway?  Or is he just not worth the drama right now when this organization seems to be constantly surrounded by it?

As bad as the Redskins need a marquee receiver opposite Santana Moss, his namesake shouldn’t be it. The Skins already have one personnel issue to deal with thanks to Shanny & Son, why import and pay a premium for another?

  • Amanda Weathersby

Moss is too high maintenance. This isn’t about drama, it’s about football. Find someone who wants to be a team player.

  • Bonekowski

Just win baby. We would never be able to keep him happy especially with shanahan jerking him around and Albert hayney always acting up, but we had nothing to lose!! Give it a shot at least and let him at least decoy some defense away from the other moss.

NO WAY!! Every other team BUT the titans passed on him, that should tell you something. Nobody throws away talent like that in the NFL unless you are just dispicable. Hes been tossed out 4 or 5 times.
