Extra, extra, read all about it. The Washington Redskins have set their roster for the season. What? You thought Mike Shanahan had set his player roster before the season opener? No, that was a tease. Larry Johnson is gone, as is Devin Thomas. Anthony Armstrong has played his way into the top tier of the receiver rotation. Clinton Ports has a bonafide back-up in Ryan Torain. Keiland Williams is on the active roster. Chris Cooley has a bonafide back-up in Fred Davis. The offensive line is set. Hunter Smith has taken over for Josh Bidwell. Kory Lichtensteiger has replaced Derrick Dockery (for now). Albert Haynesworth is in the starting defensive linemen rotation and isn’t going anywhere. Brandon Banks returns kicks and punts. Lorenzo Alexander has replaced Andre Carter as a starting Outside Linebacker.
Whew, that’s a lot of change in 6 weeks. Torain, Davis, and Smith are in their current roles due to injuries first, merit second. The others are in their roles purely on merit. It’s as if Make Shanahan has his own fantasy team. I’ve made twice as many changes on my fantasy squad, which is appropriately named the ‘anti-cowboys’. But all that requires is a computer, a little bit of reading, and a few good guesses as to whom to start. Speaking of roster changes, I’ve dropped Donovan McNabb from my fantasy team, replacing him with Matt Ryan. It pained me to do it, but hey, I’m 2 and 4 so far and can’t afford to get 10 points max. out of a QB. I’ve won the past two weeks with Eli Manning under Center. Oh the horror.
Anyhoo, the roster’s set except for future injury-induced roster moves and two position competitions. Keep your eye on the Kory vs. Derrick situation. Dockery isn’t just going to stand around and clap for Lichtensteiger. On defense, I’d watch as Phillip Buchanon gets a chance to usurp Carlos Rogers. Turnovers have kept the Redskins from being blown out in a couple games, including this past Sunday night. When the Lord created Man and said ‘Turnovers?’, Rogers replied ‘Apple or cherry’. Seriously, Buchanon is starting to shine.
