It has been a several weeks now, and Brian Westbrook is still a free agent. Westbrook has been linked to several teams, namely the Redskins, Broncos, and Rams. The Broncos were the first team to publicly drop out of the bidding, while the Rams didn’t feel like Westbrook may be headed their way. It was in my opinion that Westbrook would come here, prior to the final mini camp, but that never happened. So what’s next?
That’s what Steve Wyche of NFL.com said Thursday on NFL Network’s Total Access. Wyche reports that more teams than just the Rams, Redskins and Broncos would like to sign Westbrook.
This could be a smoke screen, because no one has surfaced as a potential landing spot for him. However, a dark-horse could always emerge from the fold. It is possible that Westbrook has no desire to participate in training camp and would like to be brought on in relief of an injured back, giving him the leverage to call his own price and spot on the depth chart. Westbrook is not receiving what he considers market value for his services. That much is obvious, because he would have signed by now. Right now, it is a matter of convenience and comfort. Reports of Willie Parker’s three camps have not been steller, and I felt if Westbrook showed up to the final mini camp, he could have given Parker a run for his money. That is not looking certain now.
