“We Want Him[Westbrook]To Sign With Us”

Mike Shanahan is not one to shy away from a running back, especially a proven one.  Though injured and forced to miss half of last season, Brian Westbrook looks to sign on with a willing team. Shanahan just hopes it’s the Redskins.

Free agent running back Brian Westbrook is expected to make a decision soon about where he’ll play in 2010. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan hopes it’s in Washington.

We want him to sign with us,” Shanahan said. “Like I said, it could be some great competition. I really like Brian, what he’s done and how he’s handled himself. I’m sure he’s weighing some options. It’s not too far away from home. Any more I can do?”

The competition Shanahan refers to would come from the running backs already on the roster, Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. With all those running backs on the roster, there might not be enough carries to go around, but Shanahan would like to try

Today Kyle Shanahan said Clinton Portis is the starter headed into training camp, and Larry Johnson was seen working with the first team goal line offesne.  This tells me that Westbrook’s pass catching skills are what the Skins are mostly after.  Should the team sign Westbrook, he and Willie Parker would appear to be battling for that thrid spot.
