This was a pretty calm weekend for the Redskins as they have just wrapped up a huge one last weekend with the conclusion of the NFL Draft, where they selected Trent Williams, OT from Oklahoma, among others. This weekend, the Skins will suit up again in jerseys and shorts, and give a go on the field once again. The storylines for this summer are shaping up as this team is beginning to bulk up in personnel and players on the bubble are making their cases, while veterans are defending theirs.
The last mini-camp was a “leg stretcher” if you will for the players. They got run around in shells, and got a chance to run plays and get a feel for each other and the new coaching staff. This upcoming mini-camp will be riding the coat tails of the latest batch of players released from the team. Along the defensive line Anthony Montgomery has been let go and PJ Hill and Anthony Alridge for the running backs. Wide receiver James Robinson was also cut, but so was Marko Mitchell, a surprise to many. Having Mitchell released is big news for the wide receiver position.
Last pre-season Mitchell showed flashes and gain popularity among fans, however his pre-season numbers were not enough to have him gain regular playing time and was often left inactive for games. What I am sensing is this coaching staff would like to utilize EVERY player at a skill position. Why have 5 wide receivers and only active 4? I know you have to balance it out somewhere and some weeks you have to sit players you would like to have playing. One theory I have is, you need a special teamer and maybe that nod is going to draft pick Terrence Austin for the time being. To me that would make a lot of sense especially since three of the top running backs, for the moment, will most likely not be playing special teams.
Anthony Montgomery was a surprise cut, at least in terms of timing. He was a late pick in the 2006 draft and had seen plenty of time playing defensive tackle the last four seasons. I feel that with all the distractions and uncertainty, this position has quietly become the deepest. With the Albert Haynesworth situation certainly going into tailspin with camp this weekend, I feel like big shake ups could occur here.
