A Closer Look At Eric Berry

by A Closer Look

In this year’s NFL Draft, there are many different paths the Washington Redskins can take.  It is my suggestion and preference that the Redskins select a offensive lineman, but it may not go that way.  Bruce Allen has said in many different ways, that the Redskins would look at the best player available. What if Sam Bradford at quarterback is taken?  What if Russell Okung is selected before the Redskins get to make their pick, what do they do? Defense has not been the problem over the last decade, but if he were available should the Skins pick up Eric Berry?

The Redskins defense played well last year, but you have to take notice on the many downfield shots that the Redskins fell victim to.  One could argue that the cornerbacking crew was beating one too many times, but how bad was the safety support?

Images of Laron Landry missing tackles and being caught out of position would be enough to make any fan shake their head in disgust.  Initially brought in to become a tandem with Sean Taylor as a free safety, Landry was meant to be a linebacker with safety speed.

So what if the Skins decided to go that route?  Who would be better to select other than Eric Berry from Tennessee could fit that prototypical free safety. At 6’0 190 he is not as big as Sean Taylor, but his skill set and ball hawking ability may be just what the doctor ordered.  It may be crazy and not the best position of need, but addition on that side of the defense certainly is not a means of subtraction.

As I said before, I prefer going offensive line, and I am steadfast behind picking up Russell Okung.  However, if it comes down to it, Eric Berry isn’t a bad pick at all.

There's no question the Redskins need help at free safety. Running back and cornerback are problem areas too. But they have no greater need than the offensive line. Supposedly this draft is heavy in good offensive linemen. If that's true, the Redskins might want to trade their first round pick for a few picks in lower rounds rather than using it. It would surprise me greatly if the Redskins chose a quarterback in a high round.
