The second quarter started with a sack of Campbell and a punt. The punt bounced the Redskins’ way, but an unsportsmanlike penalty on Tryon gave Atlanta the ball on their 35. They moved it to the Redskins’ 11 on a long run by Michael Turner, but Atlanta was called for holding. What a break. Two plays later the Falcons were called for a false start. 3rd and 17 – they ran a screen which got them to the Skins’ 49. That’s where their drive stopped.
The Skins got the ball on their 18 with 9:45 to go in the half. Clinton Portis has a concussion – he’s done. No Portis and no Cooley. On 3rd and 3 Campbell hit Mike Sellers for 47 yards. Next play Campbell was sacked for a 9-yard loss. Randle El then caught a quick out and gained 13 on some nifty moves. Then, on 3rd and 6 Campbell went down again. Suisham hit a 48-yard field goal. After such a nice pass play to Sellers, a field goal feels like kissing your sister.
The Falcons got the ball on their 38 with 5:47 to go in the half. Their starting left tackle is out of the game. He looks okay, so cry me a river. The Skins don’t seem to be able to cover the Falcons’ receivers on short routes. They’ve moved the ball into Washington territory with short passes. Atlanta is moving the ball, at will. Ouch – Michael Turner ran it in from the 32.
The Redskins started their final drive of the half on their 29 with under 4 minutes to go. After a 4-yard running play, Campbell went down for the 5th time. Fox’s Tony Siragusa said Mike Williams isn’t keeping his head up which allows rushers to run around him. I’m sure it’s not just one lineman. Todd Collins is in the game. One short toss for -4 yards and it’s time to punt. I’ve never seen a more futile offense. The Special Teams’ tackling isn’t very good either.
2:17 and the Falcons have the ball on their 19 thanks to a penalty. 2:00 to go – a shuttle pass gained 14 yards. It’s a first down at the 33. I need to cut the grass for the final time this year – it’s in the mid 70s outside. What’s wrong with me? The game’s not over yet. Atlanta is running the hurry-up. They have 2 timeouts – the Skins have 3.
Oh my – LaRon Landry hit Matt Ryan out of bounds after he ran for a first down. Then Haynesworth and Hall got into it with the Falcons’ players on their sideline. The Redskins are going to receive two penalties and will face a couple fines. Like Fox’s Daryl Johnston, I’m surprised there weren’t a couple of Redskin ejections.
Atlanta has the ball on the Skins’ 41. Two plays and boom, Ryan was sacked and called for intentional grounding. The Skins are playing mad. So mad they were flagged on the next play for roughing the passer. The Falcons now have 4 first downs on Redskins’ penalties. Daryl Johnston said it was a bad call. Nonetheless, after a short pass completion, the Falcons have the ball on the Skins’ 19. Orakpo just put Ryan on his back on the 29. No matter, Ryan hit Gonzales for a first down.
Atlanta ended the half by kicking a field goal. They’re up 24 to 3. I believe this is called a rout.
