Eagles-Redskins: End of First Half

Posted by: truthseeker

The second quarter started off with a thud.  Will Witherspoon came in unblocked and chased Campbell, stripping him of the ball from behind.  The Eagles had to settle for a 47-yard field goal.  (By the end of this game, Witherspoon could earn a spot on the NFC Pro Bowl roster.  Boy, that play-caller change sure has made a difference for the Redskins so far.)

Wowsers – the refs called a personal foul (block beneath the waist) penalty on Quinton Ganther on a sweet Rock Cartwright kickoff return.  The only problem is thst Ganther is inactive.  The penalty was on the Eagles’ Macho Harris.  Instead of the Skins having the ball on their own 12, they got it in the Eagles’ side of the field.  After a nice completion to Moss and a short pass to Randle El, Trent Cole went off-sides on 3rd and 3.  Thanks Trent!  Cartwright ran a draw to the Eagles’ 3 yard line – first and goal.  Two plays later Devin Thomas made his first touchdown reception as a pro.  We may have a game.

Talk about momentum changes.  The Eagles suddenly look like they need Sherman Lewis to call their plays.  They ran twice for a total of minus 5 yards, and promptly went three and out.  That’s okay – Antwaan Randle just fumbled the punt and the Eagles recovered.  You can’t make this stuff up.  The Skins’ defense is really being stout.  Still, the Eagles kicked another field goal.  They’re up 20 to 7.

With 4 minutes to go in the half, the Skins have the ball on their 23.  They’re still running to the left, which has had mixed results.  Mostly, they’ve gotten 2 or 3 yards per carry doing so.  Campbell just missed a wide open Santana Moss and instead threw behind Randle El.  He missed a golden opportunity for a quick touchdown.  He was promptly sacked on 3rd down.

With three minutes left in the half, the Eagles have the ball on the Redskins’ 46.  After a false start, they have it on their 49.  Another funny play call – they now have 2nd and 17 on their 47.  Reed Doughty sacked McNabb.  The Eagles now have a 3rd and 23.  No problem – McNabb got great protection and hit DeSean Jackson for the touchdown.  Until tonight, the Eagles were 0 for 16 on 3rd and 10 or longer.  Carlos Rogers was caught looking into the backfield.  I have absolutely no idea what the deep safety was doing.  (Neither did he.)

40 seconds to go.  The refs just blew another call.  Will Witherspoon committed a personal foul against Ladell Betts, throwing him down 5 yards out of bounds.  The refs certainly aren’t the reason the Skins are losing, but it’s beginning to look like amateur hour.  By the way, ESPN just showed a shot of London Fletcher on the sideline.  He literally looks like he’s asleep.

20 seconds to go.  The Redskins have one timeout.  They have a 1st and 10 on the Eagles’ 46.  Campbell barely missed Philly’s Quintin Mikell around the 20.  Hmmm.  Campbell looks shook up, but he just hit Randle El to move the ball to the Eagles’ 30.  Suisham just hit a 47 yard field goal.

Philadelphia 27, Washington 10.  The Skins will receive the second half kickoff.  Maybe they can practice holding onto the ball while they’re in the locker room.  Jason Campbell is struggling, unfortunately.

lots of positives in this game !
Campbell showed strength and confidence in the 2nd half. Defense was fantastic, a lot of heart there ! Davis should figure in on passing plays. I like this team.. just have to keep repeating.. Campbell is a keeper, he’s just young.
