Today, the Washington Nationals lost a competitive game to the Kansas City Royals on back-to-back grand slams in the bottom of the 9th inning. Check that – the Redskins lost to the Chiefs 14 to 6 thanks to two 4th quarter Kansas City field goals and a safety. How this could have happened should be beyond me. Actually, it’s not. It was the same old, same old for the Skins’ offense. They are, without a doubt, one of the most inept offenses in the league, regardless of their talent on paper. They may be the most inept after today, though I’ll have to check the stats to know for sure. Of course, the stats didn’t serve me well when I analyzed and predicted this game.
The Skins’ last drive of the game reflected how the game evolved. With 33 seconds to go, Todd Collins was sacked in the end zone as the offense looked completely listless. With 25 seconds to go, they attempted an onside kick. The Chiefs easily recovered the desperation kick, and gracefully took a knee to run out the last miserable 22 seconds of their first win. Another winless team handed the Redskins their 4th loss.
I feel bad for the fans who have attended the Skins’ three home games, in spite of the fact the home team won two of those games. My Mom is among them. Sorry Mom. I know we’ll always support our hometown team, but wow, what a drag this season has been so far. The fact it’s come after the Redskins choked during the second half of last season is downright cruel.
I feel bad for Jim Zorn – I like the man. And, I feel bad for Jason Campbell. I think he’s a class act. Come to think of it, I feel bad for the entire Redskins’ squad. They have to play the Eagles on a Monday night in front of a home crowd which is not going to be patient. Since 2000, the Redskins have compiled a winning percentage of just under 50%. They’ve lost more than they’ve won throughout the decade. They’re likely to be 2 and 5 after the Eagles’ game, and then will have to digest their achievements during the bye week. I keep thinking about Denzel Washington’s description of football in ‘Remember the Titans’. He called it ‘zero fun’. That’s what the Skins can look forward to the next two weeks – no fun at all.
I don’t know about the Redskins, but I’m going to shake this off and look forward to next Monday night. My friends in the Philly area will no doubt burn my phone up. I may even go to the game. We sit in the 3rd row of section 405, which is in the upper deck. As always, go Skins!
