It’s preseason week 2, believe it or not. Why 2? Because the Hall of Fame game officially marked week 1. Anyhoo, week 2 should definitely have had NFC East fans’ radars spinning. It has mine, as several potential rookie-of-the-year candidates have begun to emerge.
Brian Orakpo – wow! Fast, powerful, self-critical, dedicated to excellence, and football-smart. You want speed off the edge, you got it. You want a quiet nasty attitude, you got that too. Skins’ fans are gonna love this guy, plain and simple.
Jeremy Maclin – he’s gonna spell trouble for the rest of the league. The man has got serious moves and serious speed. Terry Metcalf II in my book (no disrespect meant to Eric Metcalf.) Can you say ‘All-purpose yards leader?’ I don’t want to see that, but it’s a possibility sooner than later. Speaking of Teams, the Eagles’ punt return team looked good as a unit Thursday night.
Ramses Barden – The Giants drafted him in the 3rd round, but the early returns suggest he may be more NFL-ready than their 1st round selection, Hakeem Nicks. Yea, he’s 2-tenths-of-a-tic slower than Nicks, but you gotta love his 6′ 6″ frame if you bleed G-Men blue. My crystal ball says he causes defenses more trouble than Nicks when he’s on the field.
Danny Smith will no doubt lose some sleep game-planning for Maclin. If I was him, I’d design my punt coverage around him alone and let the rest take care of itself. The Redskins cannot, they must not, lose the field position game to anyone. As for Barden and the other Giants’ receivers – all the Skins need to do is put Eli on his back, a lot. Once each quarter would be good. Twice each quarter would be wonderful.
What about Dallas, you ask? What about ‘em? I don’t like the Eagles or the Giants, but I hate the Cowboys. Their rookies don’t exist. Go Skins!
