Redskins Dominate Cowboys on the Line

More details later, but I had to get a post up so people could celebrate.  I’ve been celebrating with calls to friends and family or it would have already been up.  At any rate, despite sweating it out through an onside kick, we were fairly in control of a very good team.  Some quick stats:

161 to 44 was out rushing yard advantage.

Time of possession was 38:09 to 21:51 in our favor.

No turnovers.

That’s how you win a football game.

It could have easily been much more comfortable with Casey Rabach singlehandedly taking a TD off the board twice, not to mention Santana Moss’s long catch that could have been a TD had Campbell been able to get more air under it (he was rushed well).

Of course, a few fixable problems, too.  The line yielded some pressure, especially early.  The defense was terrible in the prevent at the end of both halves.  But I’m not going to nitpick.

More on the game later tonight or tomorrow, but wooooooooo!

My pants are all sticky.  I know that’s probably too much information, but I don’t care.
    How about them Cowboys?!?

    HAIL REDSKINS!!!

  • justin

so i will bet that godsfavoriteteam is thinkin……mabeye before i start talking smack i should wait until my team actually does something(especially in the form of a playoff game)just like last year when he started spouting off just before your first round loss, and every cowboys fan in the airport today when i was wearing my chris cooley jersey who all had something clever to say….hey number 47 how bout them cowboys?well how bout them cowboys?are the talented?yes…but until they have accomplished anything you should probably just be a little more humble.for the record the last game at texas stadium-redskins26 cowboys24 thank you jim zorn.

  • http://riggosrag.com/ Redskins Guy

I would think that Gods Favorite Team would actually be the Redskins.  I mean…God likes WINNERS doesn’t he?

  • dwagner

Actually, I think God’s favorite team might be the Cowboys.  God favors the meek and the helpless, and at least my church always said that he lavishes His love most on those who sin in order to save them.  Today I saw the sins of pride and sloth and vanity.  Plenty there to love.

imma notta gonna lie sir i i i know we dun squeakda by wif da onside kick going ours ways

[Editor's Note: I struggled with whether to delete this horribly racist posting, or to leave it in the name of freedom of speech. Ultimately, I decided the stupidity and horror of the post was the best advertisement for its own demise. For anyone who is offended, I apologize, and I assure you that it does not reflect the views of anyone here at the Rag.]

  • http://riggosrag.com/ Redskins Guy

Not only is it racist, but it’s stupid and, worst of all, not funny.

And also? It’s wrong.  We didn’t just squeak by.  The Cowboys kinda sorta came close to almost making a comeback and came up short.  We deserved to win that game and dominated them in just about every stat.

Did I mention how much I love that we’re never going to have another loss in Texas Stadium EVER AGAIN??? We left there with a win and that win will be the last thing Dallas fans ever see of us in that stadium.

  • http://riggosrag.com/ Redskins Guy

That’s just stupid really. You could say “oh gee, we’re lucky they didn’t catch that onsides field goal.”  We could just as easily say that THEY were lucky that we didn’t convert a few more of those field goals to TD’s like we really should have.  I mean, it works both ways buddy.  It was a miracle they had any chance of coming back at all.

  • justin

amen brother and it is obvious that(jason campbell)post was really godsfavoriteam who is to embarrased to use his usual name and a racistcocksmoocher who doesent like black qbs.

  • http://landryhat davedallasfand

congrats to the skins. they beat our asses on both sides of the line. we could’nt run or you guys forced us not to try. hats off to ya…….we will meet again in fed-ex……we’ll see a different outcome. it ain’t about passin out insults, guys. i ain’t here for that. i came here to say hey, you guys did it. but i know my cowboys could have won and should have, but we did’nt. thats the facts. that does make you guys any better or us any worse. if the game was played today, maybe it’s a different outcome. we will meet again. but this game is your’s and you deserve it so celebrate. there’s another next week. hats off to ya

  • jeffxandra

Could someone explain to me why the Cowboys gave up on the run so early and easily? Being one TD down is not the time to throw-throw-throw-punt.  They’ve got a lot of explaining to my fantasy teams to do…

  • dwagner

    Jeff,

The smartass answer to that is that the team is coached by Wade Phillips and they can never win against an equal opponent because they are poorly coached. And there may be some partial truth to that.

But to give them the benefit of the doubt, I’d say it had to do with the Redskins injuries in the secondary.  We shut down the running game in the first half.  And they came out in the second half and ran a couple that we stopped.  But just about that time, Shawn Springs was out with cramps, and not too long after that, Fred Smoot got his bell rung.  I’d suspect that Garret and Phillips decided that these were matchups they could exploit with two of our best CBs on the bench.  Rogers did not play very well until he moved to TO (go figure), and the rest of the secondary was vulnerable.  In fact, had the offense not kept the ball so long in the 3rd and 4th quarters, I suspect we’d have lost.  The very easy TD at the end of the game showed we were stretched to our limits in the secondary.

I obviously don’t have access to the Cowboys coaching staff, but that would be my guess.

  • jeffxandra

I’m sorry, they ran 6 times in the first half (for 5, 0, -1, 6, 1, & 3 yds). They didn’t run on 1st down until 10:20 left in the 2nd Quarter. That was the only time they ran on 1st in the 1st half. Every other run was on 2nd.  Excluding the half ending drive (all passes) they had 16 pass plays during the same period.

They followed up in the 2nd half with two running plays in the 1st drive for a total of 18 yards, and scored a touchdown to tie the game. Then they didn’t run 4 more times during the remaining 27 minutes!

That’s not the Redskins shutting the run game down. That’s them not even trying. I’m going to have to go with your Wade Phillips assessment.

  • http://landryhat davedallasfand

to bash wade phillups is not the right focus here. wade was hired a head coach to serve as the best D minded coach for the 3-4 that we spent 3 years installing with bill parcells. we needed to keep building on that D and wade was the best fit. then jason garrett was brought in to run the offense. wade, from my standpoint seems to have little to do with game and play calling, so to bash him is not the call. yes i think garrett gave up on the run to soon. it was apparent to me too as i watched the game. you just did’nt hear barbers name called. and not using felix is unthinkable??? well felix is a rookie, and the coaching staff does not seem to have all the confidence in him for the full packages on offence at this time of the season. i think they thought they could get barber out in the flat and throw him short stuff and move with him that way, and in so doing, romo would check off and throw in another direction because the pressure was getting there. lets face it, washington did a tremendious job on D and that was why our offence stumbled. we kept looking for the big play in the second half with the wash.D banged up in the secondary. landry was playing the deep ball, and that should have prompted the cowboys to take a deep breath and found the patience to go back to the run. but again, as in the last games, the big play worked, just not today, and we gave up early on the basics. you can’t run or stop the run, (the drive in the third quarter), YOU LOOSE.

  • dwagner

I would argue that it always falls back on the head coach.  If Wade can’t turn to Garrett and say, “run the bleeping ball, you moron” then he is no head coach.

Jeff, you are right that they never ran much and so we didn’t necessarily force them out, but let’s put it this way.  Our run defense helped them make it easier to make the choice they were already planning to make.  I think the goal was to jump our secondary early (which they failed to do) and finish it off with the run. When that didn’t happen, they were lost.

By the way, something that has been less talked about is the adjustment the Skins made on Jason Witten.  I’m going to talk about it more completely in my post later today.  But in the first half, Witten was the strength of the Cowboys offense because we were often letting our linebackers cover him (though we mixed in some Smoot which was very interesting given the size difference).

As the game progressed, we switched to using our safeties.  No, it isn’t earth shattering to use a safety to cover a TE, except in this case.  Prior to doing that, we were giving deep support to both sides of the field to help prevent the big play.  When we started using a safety to cover Witten, that meant Landry had to go back to playing the Angel position.  But despite that, the only long plays they got after that were in the prevent.

Witten never stopped catching the ball entirely, but he stopped being the instant chain mover he was early in the game, and despite the lack of help over the top, the secondary was still able to keep the receivers in check (again, with the exception of the prevent drive at the end). This was a key adjustment.

Congratulations guys, you won fair and square. You were the better team today. No excuses.

But do remember that all Dallas-Washington games are wild. They are not a good measuring stick for the rest of the season.  Something about these two teams brings on unpredictability.

Rememeber way back when when Dallas went 1-15? Their only win was against Washington who went to the playoffs. throw out the books when these teams meet.

Emotions are causing a lot of irrational statements, whether pro and con. Life will continue lol

  • Godsfavoriteteam

Listen guys Americas Team let you win! Just kidding. I imagine if the redskin secondary and Cambell stay healthy all year long the rest of the season is going to be tough and I wouldn’t be surprised to see yall two more times. I can admit that the Cowboys didn’t bring it sunday and the redskins did. As For Radio (justin), you need to stick with cleaning windshields at the intersection and I promise I will stop coming around and knocking the squeegy out of your hands.

  • Godsfavoriteteam

Here is a second post in memory of Radio. I didn’t write the racist comment. I hate to burst your bubbles but Somebody else used their freedom of speech before me. Hey Radio, you friend..you dumb, But friend. Ok everybody in. Americas Team on three. Ready 1. 2. 3. AMERICAS TEAM!! NICE!

  • http://riggosrag.com/ Redskins Guy

I would think America would want to be associated with a WINNER.  Maybe the Redskins are the true America’s team.

  • Godsfavoriteteam

Put away the Anointing Oil Red, its just one game.

  • http://riggosrag.com/ Redskins Guy

Yeah, but OH WHAT A GAME!

  • WestCoastSkins

They have become the Dallas CryBabies

  • Godsfavoriteteam

Man, You really know how to cut someone down westcoastforskin. Dallas Crybabies really is hurtful and sooooo original. You have completley leveled me and every cowboy fan in the world. You sir, are a master, I wish I could be the comeback wizard like you are. You took the Cowboys and replaced it with Crybabies. How did you ever think of that? Do you have to go to some sort of advanced schooling for this kind of sharpness. Teach me, I will pay you, teach me master but wait till I take my c#ck out of your mothers A@# first. Don’t think that I’m crying because the Cowboys lost, I’ve already admitted defeat for this ONE game. The screwing your mother in the A@# comment is free. Someone with the high degree of knowledge (like you) in the art of Saucy comebacks is just to much for me. You got us dude! your to much. Okay everybody in, ROMO IS A JEDI on three. 1. 2. 3. ROMO IS A JEDI!!! NICE!

  • dwagner

See, what the Cowboys fans are missing here is that the Redskins and any real Redskins fan have already moved on to think about the Eagles game.  You guys on the other hand are the ones dwelling on it.  First, it is that Rock Cartwright danced on the star (without even realizing that the game pretty much ended right on top of it).  Then it was the phantom field goal we supposedly missed.

A pro team with eyes on the prize moves on to the next game by Monday.  We’ve already forgotten you.  Here come the Eagles.

    -DW

  • Staubach

Actually dwagner, dwelling on football as we all do is strange in one respect. The country is going down the financial crapper, we are at two wars with enemies trying to come in and nuke us, and here we are worrying about who has the better team and why. Hmmm… maybe that is why we do it, so we do NOT have to focus on those things.

  • Staubach

So I guess my advice to all is to dwell on! ;-)

  • http://riggosrag.com/ Redskins Guy

While I agree that the team needs to move on and focus on the Eagles, I’m savoring this moment thankyouverymuch.  I remember those ten losses in a row to Dallas.  The fact that some of them are whining about stupid stuff makes it even more enjoyable to me.   It’s like those Patriots fans who were saying that the Giants cheated to win the superbowl.

  • WestCoastSkins

Its amazing how one dumb little word can spark such a defensive reaction from a Cowboy fan

  • Staubach

Westcoast, if you are referring to my comments, they were not a defensive reaction. I was joking a little bit with dwagner as he has shown that he is a cool guy with a good sense of humor. He is a good poster

  • WestCoastSkins

Nah I wasnt referring to you, it was directed at GodsFavoriteTeam
