Redskins Win Lawsuit

A US Court of Appeals found in favor of the Redskins in the ongoing lawsuit over whether the name Redskins is offensive. This was based mostly on a technicality that the native americans that sued waited too long to file the suit. Essentially, they waited too long to be offended which frankly seems a bit silly to me.

I know this is controversial in the Redskins fan community, but seriously, we need to prepare for the inevitable reality that one day the Redskins will have a new name.  The name is genuinely offensive to some people, and you don’t need to be a lawyer to realize that one day the Skins are going to run out of loop holes.

Personally, I think Dan ought to take a lesson from the page of fellow Washington sports team owner, Abe Polin, and change the team’s name on his own terms before someone forces him to change it. It is going to hurt.  I have no doubt the last time I sing Hail to the Redskins is going to be a sad moment.  And let’s face it, half the fun of the Cowboys-Redskins rivalry is the cowboys and indians aspect. But since it is going to happen, let’s get it over with.  And besides, if you are Dan Snyder, doesn’t this sound like a great chance to sell a whole new batch of jerseys, t-shirts, hats, etc? In a strange way, he’s sitting on a gold mine.

Anyway, like I said, I don’t want to change the team name.  Or more precisely, I want to have grown up loving a team that has had a less offensive name for the last 75 years so I don’t have to go through this.  But it WILL happen.  It is a matter of time.  Anyone feel like tossing out some suggestions?  Anyone feel like yelling at me for suggesting it?  Go for it below.

So, seeing as how the FSU Seminoles have been able to keep their name because it is the name of an actual Native American tribe, I was thinking of tribes that lived in the local D.C. area prior to European colonization of the Americas.  (Sorry…history teacher, too).  Anyway, I found an article that details two tribes that lived in the local area, the Piscataways and the Susquehannocks.  What if we changed the name to one of those?  Here’s the article.

    Well lets see there is….

    Foreskins

    Deadskins

    Blowskins

    Racists

    Bottom Feeders

    Hoggettes

    Flamers

    Reach Arounds

    Monkeys (this wont offend anybody)

    Fat Piggys

    January Golfers

    ……………………………

OK let me be serious now. How about…

    Warriors (keep the same logo)

    Reds (nothing offensive about that)

Rattle Snakes (kinda gay and cool at the same time)

Hogs (why not? you seem to embrace that name already)

LeAnn, thanks for the suggestion.  I appreciate the logic, but both are a mouthfull to say.  Find any tribes with less than four syllables?  They makes cheers a tad easier.

Ian, I’ll ignore your failed attempt at some Philly humor and say that I personally love the Hogs idea.  I’m all for it.  Here’s the important thing–being an Eagles fan you aren’t allowed to be given credit for it.  So I’m going to run with it to Dan Snyder, claim I came up with it, and split credit with Joe Bugel. Any complaints from you will lead to us injuring Donovan McNabb.  Oh wait, I guess I don’t even have to bother to do that.  He”ll do it all by himself.

I’m not convinced that we’re going to lose the name. Dan Snyder and the Redskins seem to have clout when it comes to this issue. I sort of sympathize with them in a detached way, but this is still the team I grew up with and it’ll be a sad day when I can no longer cheer for my Redskins anymore.  I can’t advocate change, no matter how racially sensitive the topic is. It’d be like ripping up my childhood and throwing it away.

You are what you are! Don’t ever change for someone else. It nevers works out.. REDSKINS for ever.

  • WestCoastSkins

NEVER! Never give up the Redskin name.

I know, I know…they were a bit long…I’ll see what I can come up with as far as other tribal names.

  • http://leann28.wordpress.com LeAnn

I thought I posted a comment, but it’s not showing up.  I found two other tribes that are native to the D.C. area…they are the Nanticoke and the Powhatan, both from Maryland.  I do like the idea of the Warriors or the Hogs.  Maybe we could use the Hogettes for some sort of logo if that becomes the new name.  :-)

I still like my “Washington Monuments” idea for a name. ;-)

Put the phallic symbol of the city on the helmut. Cant get more manly ;-)

Leave it so someone that represents a team that has a jail and a court in the “bowels” of it’s stadium to suggest names such as those.

As an over the road truck driver, I hauled many a load out to southern California. To this day I believe that I could drive Interstate2 10 and 20 with my eyes closed. I would routinely stop in Winslow, AZ. One day while there at the truck stop I saw a car pull into the laundry mat next door. The car had  Redskins bumper stickers all over it. Well I had to go and say hi to this Redskins fan.  The guy was about 30 years old and could not have been more Navajo than he was. I introduced myself with a hearty Hail to the Redskins.

Through the course of conversation I asked him why he is not a Cardinals, Chiefs, 39 1/2 ‘ers fan, or God firbid even a Cowboys fan way out in Arizona. he told me that the Redskins had always been his team and would always be his team. I asked him if he thought our name was offensive and he said “no, and he didn’t know anyone who thought that way either.” Now this is in the heart of Navajo country, where whites or any other color for that matter are few and far between.

I left the dude with a bunch of Redskins football cards and a couple of bumper stickers to boot. I am to this day glad that I talked to him and got his point of view on the matter.

As for me, I say, Hail to the Redskins!

yeah, i got a buddy that’s part native american, and heaven forbid, a redskins fan, and he says it’s great to see the tribe still on the warpath…..makes him feel in touch with his ancestry….he says…..he loves the braves to by the way….well i guees this buddy of mine is a little off the wall, but it goes to show that native americans ain’t all that upset with what is basically team pride, not an insult to a culture or a people

  • http://landryhat davedallasfan

name any of the teams that have native american symbols that actually defame the symbol????? don’t they hold that symbol to a high esteem????? so where’s the problem?????
