yeah, you are probably right considering your roster spots at wr. zorn is a former wr so having a "barn full of horses" ain't a bad thing. i just thought the skins were not going to trade down out of the first and there they could have takin phillups. i was a little higher on phillups than some of the "experts" were. my opinion was that he was a slam dunk for you guys and i was surprised when they did'nt pull the trigger??? guess they knew better. thats why i'm sittin here writing and contemplating and not drafting for some team myself.....ha ha . rinehart was one hell of a highschool player. a good well rounded kid. comes from a hard working farm community. this kid will work his ass off. iowa was going to recruit him, but he chose n.iowa because he knew he'd start, and n.iowa gave him a better accademic shot too. he would also be closer to home to see his family..... now what kid of well balanced young MAN does that sound like. great kid... you guys will love him too. and your right about bugel having a good influence on his future as well. thanks for the chat, it's been fun

Dave,

Thanks for the news on Rinehart. Its great to hear something about the small school guys, and I'm really happy we picked him now.

As for the draft assessment that we took too much on offense and let our defense hang, you aren't alone and you might be right, but consider the following. Even with all the crap happening to the team, we were 8th in the NFL in defense but only 15th in offense. We really only had two WRs on the roster. Reche Caldwell left for St. Louis, we released Brandon Llyod (thank god) and as much as I love James Thrash, his days as anything other than a special teams players are gone. Behind Moss and Randle El, the best receiver on the team might be Anthony Mix, a practice squad player. This team had two choices for filling the receiver corps-- find some veteran stopgaps likes Eric Moulds or draft at least two receivers. Even if Thomas and Kelly aren't ever starters, they are likely to perform better than an aging Thrash or Moulds or whatever other stop gap we bring in.

You can argue that we screwed up the offseason (though I would disagree) but once the roster was what it was when the draft started, I think we did what we had to do for the roster. I think it is fair to say we didn't need the second TE, but given Cooley's cap number and the variable formations we want to play that is defendable.

As for the safety, Phillips was gone before we picked in the second round and most experts had him rated as a second round pick so taking him with the 21st pick rather than trading down) would have been a stretch. Personally, I was really cheering for him to fall to us in the 2nd round because it would have been only fitting to replace Sean with the guy who replaced him at Miami. When that didn't happen, it seemed like the best thing to do was hope we could find a diamond in the rough late.

We may have gotten lucky because reports from camp say Horton has made an INT and broken up a couple of passes. At any rate, the Redskins adressed needs. I don't think any team addresses all of its needs in any given draft. I'm sure even the Pats think they could use another CB or two.

Thanks again for being a polite commentator for the other side. We love smart, considered, alternative opinions.

-DW
