New Era

Posted by: daveskins

And so begins the new era of the Redskins.  Resisting the urge to up the ante for Chad Johnson, the Redskins instead figured out that trading down for more picks was the way to go. I could quibble with the amount we got in the deal.  Because essentially I felt like the 1st and 3rd we gave them is roughly equal to the two 2nds we got so the 4th for 5th swap was really our only net profit.  But the key is that the Redskins did something smart teams do– They took advantage of market inefficiencies.

The difference in cost between the last pick in the 1st round and the 1st pick in the 2nd round is larger in price than it is in skill.  By moving into the 2nd round we were able to get first round talent for a second round price tag.  And we were able to get more of it.

Let’s face it, with three 2nd round picks, even the best teams will pick one star, one ok starter and one bust with those picks.  By taking three big targets for JZ and Campbell, we insure that at least one of them is the target we need.  These picks give us instant credibility all over the receiver corps.  With the big targets underneath and Moss and Cooley stretching the field, the offense is now truly three dimensional.

I’m going to save my specific talk of the picks for my post tomorrow that breaks down the whole draft.  But I couldn’t possibly have imagined it going any better.  Even Mel Kiper liked what we did.  Well, that scares me a bit.  But it is so much nicer to read good things during draft reviews even if Mel Kiper is often an idiot.

More as the draft unfolds tomorrow.

I like the three picks we got. I think we got great value for our picks and saved a bunch of money by trading down.  My biggest problem is that we still have gaping holes in our defense that we completely ignored.   Did we really need THREE receivers?  We need some help for our defensive line and our cornerbacks.

looks like little jimmy zorn is still tryin to find steve largent???? good luck guys. i thought you guys should have grabbed kenny phillups, but i wanted him too. now those bastards g-strings have him. oh well he could be a bust????? it’s not so much about always getting the best guy ranked, but getting good talent that fits your teams need and depth. if you hit on that then it’s a good draft. you guys could have a hell of alot of fire power on offence this year and thats scarey. the corners and a couple of safetys are still there. sunday is going to be one hell of a shootout if it’s anything close to sat. WOW i love this shit. even if we’re sworn enemies, we gotta both love the fun of this draft. good luck guys. alot of us cowboy fans have class and are’nt assholes. i hate the skins, but i love the compitition and rivalry you guys give us always. hell, a buddy of mine is an iggle fan, and i watched the draft with him yesterday, it’s fun when you got the compitition going right at the draft!!!!! it’s almost as exciting as the games themselves. davedallasfan

Sorry TDCowboys. I was too hungover from celebrating the draft. I’ll try to have a new post out within the next day or so.  I know you’re waiting with baited breath to hear about the Redskins.  And with a little luck, DW will finish his Draft analysis like he promised.

I love the pressure my boys are putting on you guys. It’s like a real game when the Redskins get trounced by the Dallas Cowboys, a historical regular occurance. WOw.

Hey Bro-sephs, I missed yall. I’ve been in italy on business but decided to stay once all deals revealed themselves as extra coin. I want to know where my good friend OLfletch is, where Gehenna is and Radio(justin). So I watched the draft and my only question is… Did the redskins participate? Lets face it (again) the redskin war room is as unproductive as this team. Even I, someone who hates this team with a passion feels sorry for the direction the current administration takes the team and its fans. In case yall forgot, (which is hard to do when it comes to the Cowboys) the Dallas Cowboys are right there for you all.  Say that, DALLAS COWBOYS. Thank you. GFT

GFT, I’m Gehenna. I just changed my name to something more football oriented. Sorry for the confusion.

As for the Redskins I was relatively pleased by our draft. We got good value for our picks. I worry about our defense as we didn’t address our defensive line or cornerback issues, but if we can hang on for one more year I think we added some much-needed offensive power to our team. We were desperate for some tall receivers who can jump up and catch the ball and we’ve got that now, for years to come we should have a great WR and TE group to draw upon. We just need to hope our defense can hold tough for one more year.
