Dec. 28                 @San Francisco 49ers (4:15pm)

Now that we’ve all had time to digest the schedule for a few days, it’s time to take a closer look at what the schedule means for us, the Redskins fans.   Here’s the breakdown…

The Good:

  • Only two away games (Seattle and San Francisco) are on the west coast.  Thirteen games take place on the East coast. Both of those are winnable. Also, playing in Baltimore might as well be a home game in terms of travel, jet lag and logistics.
  • Our non-divisional matchups seem to work in our favor. In recent history we’ve been able to dominate the Lions, Cardinals, and Rams. We were also able to defeat the Saints two years ago during their Cinderella season. Only the Steelers give me pause and I think we match up well against even them.
  • Although our postseason record against the Seahawks is bad, we tend to do better in the regular season and we’ll be pumped up for some revenge.
  • We finally managed to avoid an early-season bye (it’s week 10), allowing us to rest up for an end-of-season playoff push.
  • The Bengals, 49ers, and Ravens all have serious problems and obstacles to overcome.

The Bad:

  • So do we.  A rookie coach could easily fall on his face.
  • If things go poorly, we might not be eligible for the playoffs by the time the week 10 bye comes along.
  • As always, our division is shaping up to be one of the toughest divisions in the NFL.  No matter what else, we’re guaranteed six hard-fought games from opponents who hate us.  The Giants just won the freaking Superbowl, and both the Cowboys and the Eagles seem to be tooling up for next season.

The Ugly:

  • The big question mark is our coaching staff.  We could easily fall on our butts this year if Jay-Zee doesn’t pan out.
  • Week 1 at New York as the Giants celebrate their Superbowl victory is sure as heck a tough first game for a first time Head Coach.  Historically we do very well in the season opener, but they’ve also been home games for the most part. This game worries me and a bad loss here could shatter a new coach’s confidence.

Outlook: Fairly Sunny with Chance of Disaster.

The Redskins have essentially the same team that went to the playoffs last year.  They even have mostly the same coaching staff (aside from a few very notable changes).  The games out of our division appear to be easier than last year’s schedule and there’s no reason why we can’t make the playoffs again.  If Vinny and Zorn know what they’re doing, there’s every reason to believe that we’ll have at least a 10-6 season.  However, I think I threw up a little in my mouth just typing that last sentence.  Jim the Newbie and Yes-Man Vinny Cerrato don’t exactly inspire confidence.

Nevertheless I’m going to go ahead and be optimistic.  Let’s support our team and our new Coach until he gives us reason not to.  Yes, we could end up being terrible, but if we even repeat our performance from last year we should do well with a considerably easier schedule.  And so I give to you…

Redskins Guy’s Patented Prediction: 10-6
