Rejoice fellow NFL fans! We will no longer be subjected to Bryant Gumbel’s play by play calls. ESPN reports here that Gumbel is calling it quits. Two wretched seasons were more than enough to see that Gumbel couldn’t call his way out of a paper bag. The man had trouble keeping track of what teams were playing.
Gumbel was a notoriously conservative playcaller, refusing to take a stance on any play until a Reff called it first. “It would appear that they have enough for a first down” was his favorite line, even when he’s calling a 50 yard bomb on 1st and 10.
I could (and would) go into more detail on the many ways that Bryant Gumbel sucks, but unfortunately I’ve been scooped by LandryHat, so I’ll simply point you to the excellent article he wrote, which you can find here.
Bryant Gumbel proves that there is such a thing as Addition by Subtraction. The NFL will be a better place without him. Now if only ESPN would sack Emmitt Smith, my day would be complete.
