ESPN reported that free agent WR Reche Caldwell signed with the Rams. I can’t say it really hurts the team that much to lose Reche. He had a couple of key catches down the stretch but really hadn’t gotten into the receiving rotation much by the end of the year.
The biggest blow is kinda to my pride. Realistically, Caldwell was our number 3 receiver and I can’t see him being better than the 4th receiver in St. Louis. It can’t be the money since he’s only getting a one year deal worth $654,000. Essentially, I think he thought he’d be happier elsewhere. And that makes me sad, and hurts my feelings as a Skins fan.
Truthfully, guys like Caldwell are a dime a dozen. There are guys like Caldwell, Dennis Northcutt, Darrell Jackson, Peerless Price bouncing around the league every year. There are a couple of free agents out there right now that are bigger (in size) than Caldwell and appear to have roughly the same amount in the tank. Don’t be surprised if you see names like David Givens (returning from two major knee injuries but with interesting upside), Eric Moulds, Eddie Kennison, or Aaron Moorehead as potential training camp try outs.
At any rate, thanks Reche. You made some big catches when it counted. I would have liked to see you stay, but I can’t hold a grudge. Good luck.

As much as I agree that Reche is in the dime-a-dozen category, right now the #3 is James Thrash. Is there a wideout we should be expecting the Redskins to pull in or are they definitely drafting a wideout come April?
Well, I think the plan was to draft a WR all along. The question is simply where. If we signed DJ Hackett, we’d have probably waited until the later rounds. With Caldwell, we would have only taken one had the right one fallen to us in the draft. If we do not sign a veteran replacement or too, we will likely make WR an imperative in the draft.
We do have one little known internal option that is intriguing. Zorn has already mentioned Anthony Mix a receiver from Auburn who played with Jason Campbell. Mix is 6′ 5" and 235 lbs and may turn out to be a great target for this type of offense. By the way, it was Mix who recovered the kickoff and took it into the end zone during the Seattle playoff game. Even though the TD was called back, it had to be one of the most exciting plays of the year last year. What that means, I don’t know. But I’m pulling for him if only because of that play.
