Johnson Skipping All the Way to Washington?

ESPN reported today that Chad Johnson is skipping Bengals off season workouts to protest the way he is treated by the team and to underline his desire to play somewhere else.

All I have to say is keep on keeping on, Chad.  I know most of my fellow bloggers have posted that they don’t want Chad Johnson.  And I know some of you have commented here that you don’t want him, and it boggles my mind, personally.  Imagine this from the point of view of Jason Campbell for a moment.  Let’s say that you are a young QB in the NFL.  You’ve got only a limited amount of time to establish your reputation before the bust label starts coming out.  You’ve got two quick but tiny receivers, and you are being asked to switch to your 6th system in 7 years dating back to college.  You are about to be used in a system that works best with a few big targets that can run inside routes and break tackles.  Wouldn’t you hope we actually acquired a receiver that fit that mold?  And wouldn’t you feel safer if that receiver happened to be a megastar with great hands, break away speed, and who despite his reputation for antics has never thrown his QB under the bus or otherwise been a bad team player?

Of course you would.  Johnson is perfect for this offense.  Johnson is the game breaker this offense needs to take pressure off of Campbell and Clinton Portis.  And every time Johnson skips a workout or gives an interview where he shows how unhappy he is, the price goes down a little bit.

If the price drops to a second rounder or less, we’ve got to pull the trigger on this deal.  And I’ll be the first in line to buy a Redskins Ocho Cinco jersey.

It’s not that I don’t want him.  But look at what Javon Walker got in Oakland. Johnson is going to want a huge contract. I just don’t know if it’s wise to pay him what he’s going to want.  I was also operating under the assumption that the Bengals would want more than a 2nd round. If they’ll take a 2nd round for him, that obviously is more viable. I’m not sure where you’re getting your numbers though.  But if they’ll take a second round from us, you’d think that some other team would offer a 1st round. How exactly is he going to fall to us for a 2nd round? The cowboys have two first rounds to spend and JJ is desperate to make a splash.

Well, I’m not getting my numbers from a source.  It is just an educated guess based on the cost of recent WR trades, particularly when the receiver wanted out.  Randy Moss was a 4th rounder.  Javon Walker was a 2nd rounder. Wes Welker (who did not force a trade) was a 2nd rounder.  The Eagles couldn’t even trade Owens because he behaved poorly enough.  They had to release him.

Basically, in recent years I can’t think of someone who forced their way out of a city where the team got a first rounder. If I were the Redskins I’d discreetly pass on to Drew Rosenhaus that if Chad wants to be a Redskin, they would be willing to ignore some situps in the driveway.  If Chad tries hard enough, we can get him for a 4th rounder.  Just watch.

As for the contract, I really don’t care about that.  Dan has the money.  He wants to spend it, and if any team has shown that the salary cap is a joke, it is the Redskins.  We’ll sign him to a big signing bonus and a backloaded 6 year deal that won’t even hurt the cap. There will be so many roster bonuses and performance triggers we’ll be sending him a new check every week of the offseason, but his cap number will be like a buck and a half.

You make it sound good. If we can get him and it’s like that, then I’m in. I’d certainly be excited about adding a Chad Johnson to the team. Just as long as we don’t give up all our draft picks or destroy our future cap situation, it sounds good to me.
