John Buccigrass of ESPN just broke into regular ESPN coverage to talk about the Shaq trade, but also said that Giants assistant coach Steve Spagnuolo turned down the Redskins job to stay with the Giants.
What bothers me, of course, is not losing Spagnuolo. I don’t think he was a great fit, and I think he had a good defense that got hot at the right time. The problem is that it is obvious people are turning down this job because they don’t want to work with Snyder and Cerrato. And this is a real problem.
Discounting the owner, this is a great job to have. You inherit a team that made the playoffs, has a young QB who looks like the real deal, tons of resources, a great fan base, and fabulous stadium and training facilities. No coach would turn down this job if the owner was Dan Rooney.
I’m still pulling for Ron Meeks, but as news gets out other people were offered the job, some of these other coaches will have too much pride to take it. I really hope Dan calls his next choice whoever it is and makes him an offer he can’t refuse. Today, please, Dan.
More on this as it develops. Right now, there isn’t even a link to give you [update, here is the link from Jason La Confora]. As the reporters file their stories, we’ll stay on it.
