Welcome to the OC, Jim Zorn
It was buried in the ESPN headlines today, but the Skins apparently interviewed former Seahawks QB (and current QB coach), Jim Zorn for the offensive coordinator position. The article stresses that he was interviewed without a head coach being hired.
What? Since when does a head coach not get to hire his OC? I know the Cowboys did it last year, but that’s part of the reason why they have a coaching controversy there now. Add that to the fact that we are clearly acting under the assumption that Al Saunders is not our OC, and things look out of control.
Zorn does seem like an excellent choice for OC if we do need one. He has been grooming Matt Hasselbeck and while he is a Holmgren boy, he is not wedded to the west coast offense. For those who can remember that far back, he was QB during part of the “ground chuck” era. Not exactly exciting information, but at least he’s got versitility.
This also throws the whole “what the heck did Jim Fassel interview for” mystery into high gear. Since we don’t know if he was the OC candidate or the HC candidate and we know we’re interviewing OC’s as well as HC’s who the heck knows. To my knowledge, there is no connection between Zorn and Williams or Fassel. If either is the head coach, he’d be ask to accept someone from a different coaching tree.
There is one possibility here. Perhaps Fassel said, “If I’m hired these are the guys I’d like in (that would also explain why we talked to Rex Ryan)” and Snyder is interviewing them to see if he wants a Williams/Saunders ticket or a Fassel/Zorn/Ryan ticket.
Bottom line? Things just keep getting weirder. We’ll keep an eye on it.
