The NFL in its infinite wisdom today announced that they would replace the man who was leading the league in INTs when he died with the guy who leads the league in dirty tackles and blown deep coverage assignments. Using Roy Williams, who admittedly is a hell of an 8th guy in the box, is an insult to Sean Taylor and the Redskins. I know in the real world people could care less about the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry, but this isn’t the real world. This is the NFL, and we have rivalries. Would it have killed the NFL to go outside the box and picked a non-safety Redskins like London Fletcher or Clinton Portis who both clearly have the numbers to go to the Pro Bowl? Would it have killed them to pick Marcus Trufant from Seattle or OJ Atogwe who lead the NFC in INT’s? Trufant had 5 more INTs and more solo tackles than Williams who only lead Trufant in total tackles by 7.
For that matter, rookie Laron Landry had more tackles and sacks than Roy Williams. There is just no objective measure that shows Williams is really worthy of the Pro Bowl this year.
I can’t deny that the Cowboys are having a heck of a season. 13-3 means you get a bunch of guys in the pro bowl. Tony Romo, Flozell Adams, Jason Witten, Terrell Owens, and Demarcus Ware all definitely belong. And probably a couple more. But I do want some sanity. And I do want some variety. And this doesn’t just go for the Cowboys. How Patrick Willis isn’t starting over Lofa Tatupu I’ll never understand.
Anyway, I know this will draw fire from the Landry Hat, and that the NFL doesn’t care about our petty squabbles. But I would like them to make an effort to get these things right. That’s part of the reason we don’t watch it anymore. They don’t seem to notice that the best players aren’t usually even there.
[Editor's Note: I was asked to change this post to reflect an oversight on my part. In the name of journalistic integrity, I will respond to my reader's comments. The Dallas Cowboys had the highest number of pro bowlers by one team in a single season. I find this utterly ridiculous and a gross injustice. I'm particularly annoyed with the selections of Marion Barber (already covered on this site) and 3 offensive linemen despite the fact that this team was only 7th in rushing and 4th in sacks allowed in the NFC. I also find it ridiculous that the three best defense in the NFC (Tampa, NYG, and Washington) have half as many representitives combined as the Cowboy's 4th ranked defense (4 to 2). How can this happen? This satisfies my obligation to my readers.]
