You Can Fill-In Roy, But You Can’t Replace Him

The NFL in its infinite wisdom today announced that they would replace the man who was leading the league in INTs when he died with the guy who leads the league in dirty tackles and blown deep coverage assignments. Using Roy Williams, who admittedly is a hell of an 8th guy in the box, is an insult to Sean Taylor and the Redskins.  I know in the real world people could care less about the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry, but this isn’t the real world.  This is the NFL, and we have rivalries.  Would it have killed the NFL to go outside the box and picked a non-safety Redskins like London Fletcher or Clinton Portis who both clearly have the numbers to go to the Pro Bowl? Would it have killed them to pick Marcus Trufant from Seattle or OJ Atogwe who lead the NFC in INT’s?  Trufant had 5 more INTs and more solo tackles than Williams who only lead Trufant in total tackles by 7.

For that matter, rookie Laron Landry had more tackles and sacks than Roy Williams.  There is just no objective measure that shows Williams is really worthy of the Pro Bowl this year.

I can’t deny that the Cowboys are having a heck of a season.  13-3 means you get a bunch of guys in the pro bowl.  Tony Romo, Flozell Adams, Jason Witten, Terrell Owens, and Demarcus Ware all definitely belong.  And probably a couple more. But I do want some sanity.  And I do want some variety. And this doesn’t just go for the Cowboys.  How Patrick Willis isn’t starting over Lofa Tatupu I’ll never understand.

Anyway, I know this will draw fire from the Landry Hat, and that the NFL doesn’t care about our petty squabbles.  But I would like them to make an effort to get these things right.  That’s part of the reason we don’t watch it anymore. They don’t seem to notice that the best players aren’t usually even there.

[Editor's Note: I was asked to change this post to reflect an oversight on my part.  In the name of journalistic integrity, I will respond to my reader's comments. The Dallas Cowboys had the highest number of pro bowlers by one team in a single season.  I find this utterly ridiculous and a gross injustice.  I'm particularly annoyed with the selections of Marion Barber (already covered on this site) and 3 offensive linemen despite the fact that this team was only 7th in rushing and 4th in sacks allowed in the NFC. I also find it ridiculous that the three best defense in the NFC (Tampa, NYG, and Washington) have half as many representitives combined as the Cowboy's 4th ranked defense (4 to 2). How can this happen? This satisfies my obligation to my readers.]

That really is a slap in the face.  God I hope the Cowboys fall on their ass in the playoffs.  How did it come that Roy Williams was selected anyway? Did he draw the most votes or something?

Oh what the hell do you want, a ghost to go out there and play? Get over it. You failed to mention Dallas broke the record for the most Pro Bowlers in 1 season for 1 team. Please fix this post.

It’s a Dallas record. Not and NFL record. Sorry, I made an error. hehe.Still though, you are disrespecting Roy. Do you even realize he plans to honor Taylor at the Pro Bowl? Did you just happen to miss that point? Please clarify that!

  • dwagner

Well first off, seriously, if Roy Williams was shot, would you really say it was nice that Sean Taylor was honoring him?  I doubt it.

My current feeling about it is that I will wait and see what he does. If he does something nice, I’ll say so.  If he does something perfunctory and half-assed, I’ll ignore it.

We’ll see.  In the meantime, I still say that there were safeties who had better years than he did and should be going.

No, I wouldn’t be annoyed of WIlliams died and Taylor wanted to honor him. You are slamming Roy because he is a Cowboy. You wouldn’t do this if some Bucaneer took his place. This is disgusting. You are trying to please hyenia geheena

  • gehenna

hyenia geheena? Okay that’s new.  It’s nice to see that you’re stooping so low that you’ll make fun of people’s names.  At least I don’t have some dumbass name that’s misspelled like half of your fan base does Dan.  But if you prefer, I can change it to ‘dumbeasse-Cowboyz-hatier’ or something you might find more familiar and comforting.  At any rate, you’re absolutely right. We’re pissed off because it IS a Cowboys player.  If it was a Tampa player, nobody would care.  The reason why it’s a slap in the face is because Sean Taylor was a Redskin and (like most Redskins) hated the Cowboys in the name of good old-fashioned rivalry.  One of the quotes he made that I saw in his memorial was how he loved it most when he could play at home with the fans against a division rival like Dallas.   I really have nothing against Roy Williams (except for his choice of uniforms) but I think it’s a shame that a Redskin Pro-bowler is being replaced by our most hated rival.  Stop being such a whiny bitch and recognize that our hatred of your team also comes with a certain amount of respect (a respect that you yourself seem to lack regularly).
