So Close and Yet…

*Sigh*

Saturday night I had prepared myself for writing an article about how it was ok we lost. Especially since I believed (and it happened) that the giants would beat the Lions.  That would mean we were still only a game out of a playoff slot.

But now that we had a real chance to win.  Now that we were Campbell tucking that ball down and running with it away from beating these guys, I find it hard to say that it is ok. I just keeping thinking Sean Taylor would have stopped at least one of those Owens TDs.  And on the third one in particular, I keep thinking not only would Taylor have stopped it, but he would have seperated TO’s head from his shoulders.

As it is, it was nice to see Moss back in the game, and it was nice to see Cooley have a big game because Moss was opening the middle for him.

And didn’t Jason look great apart from a couple of plays?  That’s the price of breaking in a young QB, and I’m willing to pay it.  Next year or the year after, I imagine Jason doesn’t miss the wide open TD in the middle of the 4th quarter when he threw a tough (and nearly perfect) post to Cooley instead. I imagine he tucks the ball and runs for the first down with about 2 minutes to go.  At the very least, he says to himself he has another down and throws it away.

I’m bummed.  I can’t help but think the last two weeks meant the difference between playoffs and drafting in the middle of the 1st round.  They don’t give you credit in the standings for covering the spread.

On the other hand, this team played a good game against a good team.  that’s the first time we’ve really done that.  Maybe it is a sign of good things to come.  And we have to go play another good team this week in Tampa.  Hopefully we can put together another good offensive day and patch up the D against big plays.  If we do, we’re still in it.

*sigh*
