Back to Business
OK, with this bye out of the way, it is time to get down to the business of making the playoffs. Lots of bits of news:
The first thing is that we signed Keenan McCardell. Much like the Corey Bradford signing, this is one of those no risk-medium reward kind of pickups. It would be nice if it turned out well, but we likely will never see McCardell take the field.
On a side note, I have nothing to go by but instinct, but I suspect we’ll see Reche Caldwell this week against Detroit. The bye week was probably the time he needed to get up to speed with the playbook.
Annoyingly, Portis and Moss did not return to practice today. Moss is still recovering from the groin injury but is likely to play. Portis is getting his tendanitis back. Let’s hope he can go with treatment, but given he was out a month before we might lose him for a game or two.
We especiallly need Portis because in looking at the Lions defense, the best way to beat them is with speed. They shut down Cedric Benson, limited Lamont Jordan, and with the exception of one huge run did a fair job against Adrian Peterson. On the other hand, Brian Westbrook torched them after looking like crap against us. They were also vulnerable to the deep ball. We’ll do more of a preview later, but for us to get the offense on track, we need Portis to get outside on the edges and Moss and Randle-El to get open deep. That won’t happen if they are in the treatment room.
More as the week unfolds.
