The Cowboys signed Tank Johnson today to a two year deal. It would be easy to make fun of this signing. On the surface it looks like a typical Dallas Cowboys maneuver. Ignore the crime for the talent. Just like they ignored it with Michael Irvin, Nate Newton, Barry Switzer, Jason Garrett, etc. And of course, they cut crappy guys like Quincy Carter when they get arrested. That’s the Cowboys (and the Raiders) for you.
The problem here, of course, is that the Redskins could use the help on the line, and it is hard for me not to think it would have been well worth the $220K that the Cowboys are giving to Tank for a late season shot in the arm.
Considering that Sean Taylor has been arrested both for gun violations and driving drunk, it is hard for me to say that Tank Johnson doesn’t deserve a second chance. And heck, Coach Gibbs helped turn Taylor into a fine citizen. Maybe he could do the same for Tank.
The truth is that Tank is a slightly above average player who probably will never grow to be much more because of lost development time. But he’s cheap. He’d fit into our rotation. And we could have used him. I’m sad we didn’t go for it.
