The Post Apologizes to Pucillo…Sorta

I don’t really have much to say about this article in the Post about Mike Puccilo except that I think this has to be some sort of tacit apology for ripping Pucillo and Heyer last week after the Steelers game.

Last week I quoted Coach Gibbs and Coach Bugel laying into the Post for comments about the struggling left side of our line. The frustrating part for the coaching staff and for me was that the article was about the organization’s failings but at the same time was rather personal in calling out two young men who were being forced into a tough situation and stepping up better than either could be expected.

The Washington Post is a big organization.  They certainly don’t have to worry about hurting the feelings of Mike Pucillo.  But still, I can’t help but wonder if the editors at the Post were feeling a bit bad about the way things turned out and sent Camille Powell to Redskins Park to help makes amends.

Anyway, I end with two quotes from the coaching staff to show how much Pucillo deserves this attention:

“We love him,” offensive line coach Joe Bugel said earlier this month. “He’s one of us. He’s one of our hardest workers, he’s blue collar all the way. He does everything we could ask him to do.”

“Mike Pucillo is probably as hard a worker as I’ve ever coached,” Gibbs said during training camp. “I don’t know of anybody that could be more prepared and has given it more of an effort than Mike and I think he’s gained tremendous respect from his teammates because of that and all the coaches. We think a lot of him. He never says a word, it’s always just, ‘What do you want me to do?’ ”

Good enough for me.  I’m a fan, and apparently the Post is, too. It’s about time.
