ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that the Redskins and Jets have finalized a deal that would bring Pete Kendall to the Skins in exchange for a 4th round draft pick.
Kendall is rated by Scouts Inc. as better (by a little) than departed LG Derrick Dockery. For those with ESPN Insider, you can read the scouting report here. Even if age and accumulated injuries are taking their toll, I suspect that Kendall will be our starting LG for the season as soon as he is up to speed with the playbook. This adds much needed depth to the roster, allowing an insurance policy in the form of Todd Wade is Stephon Heyer isn’t ready to be the backup LT.
The only reason I’m not even more excited by this deal is a) it hasn’t been formally announced and b) Kendall has a long history of needing painkillers to be ready each week. Profootballtalk cites a New York Daily News article discussing the matter.
Anyone who read my post on painkilling injections last week knows how I feel about this. I don’t think a player should be forced to give up his long term health for the league. However, my concern is that Kendall will now shy away from reasonable treatment that would allow him to play and do him no harm because of his past experiences.
Still, this has to be seen as a good sign if it happens. The Skins are addressing a big need area with a very minor cost (a 4th rounder). Let’s hope it is official soon.
