Campbell News
I’m sure you all read the ESPN story about Campbell as part of their training camp previews. This is the pretty standard fare of the “young QB ready to make good” variety. But let’s face it, it is much better than the “young QB holding out” story that is playing out in Cleveland and Oakland or the “young QB is a bust” story that played out in Houston and will soon be played out in New York.
Still, there is extra good news in this story. Most of these stories are cluttered with how well the QB in question is throwing the ball or how the game is “slowing down” for them. The great thing about this story is that it centers on how hard Campbell worked. The story is full of lines like, “During most of the past two seasons, Campbell took extensive notes while standing on the sidelines so he could recognize all the different looks that opposing defenses could throw at him. He watched how Brunell handled himself in the huddle and he eagerly accepted whatever tips Brunell offered. In all my years as a football fan I can’t recall ever reading about a player taking notes on the sidelines.
Here’s another gem: “He gave himself one week of rest during the offseason, and that was only so he’d have time to enjoy the Fourth of July.” I’m all for that. The 4th in DC is great. And even if made the mistake of going home, he earned more than a week off.
Perhaps the best part of the article and what separates this from your typical “young QB ready to breakout” story is the fact that this is the first time including college that Campbell has had the same offensive coordinator two years in a row. That means instead of overloading the young QB, Campbell has had the chance to look back at the same plays and improve. This obviously can only help.
I don’t know about you folks, but I’m excited about Jason. He just looks like the real deal. I love his arm and his leadership. Its been awhile since I bought a Skins jersey for an active player because I got tired of having to retire them when that player moved on. I’m thinking I’m safe if I want to get a Campbell jersey. That’s a good feeling.
