Heh, I spent 72 hours on the Landry vigil and finally decided to take a bit of a break from the site and all hell breaks loose.
As you have heard by now, Laron Landry is in camp. I have to say my biggest disappointment was that he signed Sunday night (late Monday morning) and didn’t make practice on Monday. But this story in the Washington Times made me feel better. Apparently, Landry was trying to make it and his plane was late. He was in Baton Rouge practicing with the LSU team.
Fair enough, though if I ever find that lamp I [...]

Freakin’ Airlines
I’ve been on record even after his great game against the Cowboys two years ago that Brunell was not an NFL QB anymore. And most people agree after last year. But there are still a surprising number of people in the blogosphere who like Brunell. When the rumor came out that we might trade him to the Falcons, there were actually people advocating that he is too valuable to trade.
Anyway, I like Brunell. I think he’d make a great coach, but some fabulous data from Football Outsiders shows me that the man should never throw another ball in the NFL. [...]
That Sound You Hear…
…is the sound of my foot tapping while waiting for Laron Landry to sign. But first, a Redskin said the following today, any guesses on who it is?
“I’ll try to be smart. That’s tough for me, but I’ll try.”
Back to Landry, according to Redskins.com, Joe Gibbs said, “I’m expecting [the contract signing] to happen any minute.” Of course yesterday he said he expected a deal to be done “shortly.” The Washington Post points out that one of the problem is the one we’ve always known– the players slotted around Landry haven’t signed. I’m no agent, and I’ve never been considered [...]
A Digression
I’m sorry. This has nothing to do with the Redskins or Washington. But I couldn’t ignore it. Today in Phoenix, two news helicopters crashed into each other trying to film a high speed chase for local news. First, let me say that I feel for the families of all involved and that the following is not a criticism of the people on the helicopter. They were just making a living like everybody else.
But if this is not an indication of how ridiculous the media and our country in general has gotten, I don’t know what is. Local news is so [...]
Notes from the First Day of Camp
Not a lot of heavy news to report on the first day of camp. I’m just happy every one is there and everybody’s happy.
Well almost everybody. Laron Landry missed the first day but Redskins.com reported a signing was forthcoming both in this story and when Gibbs took the podium after practice.
An unexpected extra player came in the form of veteran wide receiver and late signing Corey Bradford. I like this pick up as a low-risk, nice potential signing. It hurts Mike Espy a bit, and if I were James Thrash I’d be making sure I didn’t miss a tackle in [...]
Do You Hear That?
Do you hear that? Very quietly, very faintly, but as though it is coming closer…almost like a train approaching from the distance…its the sound of pads crunching into each other. Its the sound of helmets knocking. By the time you wake up and read this, training camp will be here.
Happy Football!

Pro Football Prospectus 2007
For any real football fan, Christmas really does come in July with the release of Pro Football Prospectus from the guys at footballoutsiders.com. Mine arrived yesterday and I immediately turned to the Redskins section and have been working my way around it ever since.
For those unfamiliar with the book, it is roughly the size of a phone book and ever single page is chock full of incredible insights. The gang lead by Aaron Schatz is on a mission to instill some statistical rigor to the game in an attempt to understand it better. I know. Some of you just made fake snoring [...]
Rookies!
I’ll admit it. I love rookies. I love upside. Potential is one of my favorite words. Check out my fantasy football rosters (which you will get to do soon) and you’ll see way too many young guys. So when Redskins.com did a little story on the 5 rookies to watch in training camp, I just knew I’d have to talk about it.
I will try to keep my comments separate and original from Redskins.com but obviously there will be some overlap. For instance, we’re both likely to say things like “he’ll only make an impact on special teams” a lot because [...]
Playoff Preview
Sorry for the delay, folks. The perils of having a baby in the house. We have to finish this little season preview today so we can get on to the business of celebrating the start of training camp.
Let’s look at the AFC first-
As you might recall, I predicted the Jets, Colts, Bengals and Denver to win their respective divisions. The Pats and Chargers are the likely wild card teams (with Jacksonville being the other contender) .
AFC Wild Card Round
#3 Indy vs. #6 San Diego- An opening round game of Indy and San Diego might just be the highest [...]
NFC East Preview
Every year for the last 4 or 5 years, I have found myself sitting with some friends. Sometimes it was after a fantasy football draft. Sometimes it was in the parking lot of Fed Ex before the opening game. But at any rate, it happened every year, the same group of friends and one would ask, “So, how do you think the Skins are going to do this year?” Every year, I’ve accidentally and independently come up with the same answer…
“Oh, pretty good. Maybe 10-6. Probably 9-7. Yeah, 9-7.”
Some of those years I was [...]
