Redskins sign CB Jerametrius Butler

The Redskins announced that they officially signed former Rams CB Jerametrius Butler and that he is already at Redskins Park to participate in OTAs.

I know that this move barely hits the radar for most of you. ESPN didn’t mention it on NFL Live, and I saw it first on the ticker on ESPN news. But these are the kinds of moves that can make a championship. Butler was an up and coming young DB before injuries slowed him down the last two seasons. This actually reminds me a lot of the Shawn Springs signing. When the Redskins dropped a forklift of money on Spring’s to pry him away from Seattle in ‘04, we were roundly criticized for giving a huge contract to a player who was so fragile.

We all know how great the Springs signing has been for us, and this has two key differences–1) We aren’t paying Butler that much. 2) Butler is 2 years younger than Springs was when we signed him which means he should be far more likely to stay healthy.

Mark my words, there will be a time this season when we get decimated by injuries in the secondary. We’ll be a lot happier with Macklin or Butler lining up against Glenn, Burress, or Brown (the NFC East’s #2 receivers) than Ade Jimoh. Sorry Ade, I love your effort, but I like it best on special teams.

Actually, my first thought wasn't Shawn Springs, but another Rams DB, Adam Archuleta….
